Hello everyone! It is indeed that time of the week yet again where we seek your questions so we can answer them live on DF Direct Weekly. Well live in the sense that we answer them when we record, but it is pre-taped technically I suppose... Anyway, your questions, leave them below!

What do you think is responsible for the lack of four- and even two-Player split-screen multiplayer on modern consoles? Is it just because of low ROI? Given the fact that one Series X SoC can run four Xbox One instances and a PS5 can even run Uncharted 4 at 4x the framerate compared to a PS4, shouldn’t that make it easier than ever before? Especially when you consider that resolution could even go a lot lower than 1080p for each player and still deliver a perfectly fine Multiplayer experience. No Split-Screen at all in FH5 and GT7 being limited to two players seem baffling.

Hello DF Crew. With the upcoming titles Horizon, Starfield, FM and GT, I have increasingly asked myself the question of whether it might be possible to make a kind of generation comparison. In these videos, games from the last generation of a franchise or developer would be compared with the latest titles of this franchise or developer to show what has changed. Would you be interested in this kind of video?

Anonymous

Hi there! I thought about the idea of comparing graphics and rendering features/quality of platform exclusives from the beginning and the end of a console generation just to see how far the devs have pushed for example the PS4 and how rendering performance evolved over this time. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you for your great work!

Games with a lot of licensed content like the Project Gotham Racing series seem to run into issues getting rereleased digitally or added to backwards compatibility when their licensing deals expire. Is there a way publishers can resolve this for older titles or ensure it doesn't happen to newer games so that they are more easily preserved and made available to buy digitally? Or will it remain an inherent risk with games that have licensed content?

Hey guys, did you have any chance to look at the Dying light 2 VRR mode for Xbox? Seems like it now runs at 80-100 fps on average in performance mode, as far as I can tell through LGs built in VRR info screen. Do you think DRS with a locked 60 would have been better instead?

Anonymous

@Alex, your first pitch to Digital Foundry was on the Arma 3 engine and Bohemia Interactive have now started providing details on their new Enfusion Engine. Any plans to do interviews or a tech preview on it?

Hello DF. I recently got my self a LG C1 48" oled tv, and I love it. BUT playing 30 fps games on this tv is so much worse than on my old nanocell tv. Before I could play a game on 30 but not any more. Is there a setting that is sutible for 30 fps games.

Anonymous

Hello, i got an lg c1 for black friday and while ofcourse its a great gaming display, im still not fully convinced on hdr. What are some great hdr implementations in games to really convince somebody that hdr is as amazing as some people say it is?

Anonymous

Hey DF crew, thanks for all the incredible content over the years. My question is for Alex - Your gaming interests seem to heavily favor the PC (okay, I’m stating the obvious). Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on bespoke console experiences? Especially ones that are generally highly regarded, like first-party Nintendo titles. If not, why?

Is Haddaway still a big deal in Germany?

Anonymous

This is more rhetorical, because I know the answer, but humour me. How come in the current climate of chip shortages, does Nvidia insist on spewing out GPU's that span every tiny iterative price bracket instead of pooling resources to make a 1080p, 1440p and 2160p card? (Like I say, I know the answer) but surely because cards are so scarce they would still sell them, but the upshot would be that people would have a greater chance of buying the card they want instead of seeing a potential 3090ti on the horizon and thinking, you set of dicks. Rant over, keep up the good work chaps.

Nico Simmons

First off: Love the work you do here! I'm knee-deep in exploring the new Cyberpunk 2077 1.5 Patch. I'm pretty confident that you want to cover this along the way (right? =), but I'm curious about one feature in particular that has no user exposed toggle yet (to my knowledge): VRS! Do you plan on covering this aspect of it on the PC side? I'm thinking revised Alex' Settings are in order, this time. Anyway, keep up your amazing cadence of videos and Direct/Retro goodness and have a great day ^-^

Hello there! Although AMD caught up to Nvidia in raster performance with RDNA 2 they lack behind in RT and ML features such as DLSS. Who would you recommend to buy AMD GPUs assuming the cards are available at MSRP? Do you think AMD can catch up with Nvidia in RT/ML and does the coming XeSS help AMD? Love your content! Keep it up!

Hey DF weekly crew. Based on your analysis of Horizon Forbidden West, do you think there is enough headroom for a 40 fps mode? I'm really hoping we see more games add this as the gen progresses and more tvs support hdmi 2.1

MittenFacedLass

This bums me out a lot. So many great old racing games that are left behind because they aren't licensed anymore. :(

Playing Forza Horizon 5 I couldn't help but notice how tire smoke clips inside the cars. I know it's a minor thing in overall amazing game, but is there any way developers can solve it with modern techniques or is it inherent to the way sprite particles work? Could compute shaders solve it?

Sven Dahlin

How could Machine Learning be used in games aside from upscaling / downscaling?

With so many old titles being supported by xbox, but so many titles no longer having online support, do you think it would be feasible to implement tunnelling software like xlink kai directly into the dashboard? I imagine it similar to (or integrated within) group chat, where anyone within the group would be visible on a virtual LAN. This would breath new life into system link games. Made available to gold or game pass ultimate subscribers to avoid taking away from that revenue. What are your thoughts on this idea and do you think it is possible? Feel free to pass this idea on to uncle Phil. Thanks for the great content also.

Anonymous

My homies, do you think it's possible with the current generation technology that we will be able to maybe implement our own face scan to characters in maybe role playing games of sorts? Maybe even hear our own names outspoken in game? Is that even feasible? And btw, why not go for 2k instead of 4k all the time? Would that not benefit framerate and still get awesome visuals on the new Gen consoles? P. S Yeah Audi, gonna need that chili recepie? Put it on screen with some awesome tune 💕

With the announcement of the end of the. Wiiu EShop in March 2023; what are your thoughts on it? Is there anything the might be lost that's particular to the Wiiu Eshop that will be lamented in the future?

What graphical elements of Horizon Forbidden West could benefit from an eventual PC port?

What is the fighting game you enjoy playing the most those days and why ? We know Street Fighter 6 is in the work and could release in 2022: what do you expect from it ?

What's the state of HDR on Linux today, and how much of a shame is it that Steam Deck does not support it on it's built-in display? Any chance that it will be able to do it on an external monitor (via cord draping)?

I'm curious as to your thoughts on CrossfireX and specifically the use of Remedy's Northlight engine for the campaign. (I was personally disappointed in all aspects of the game)

BitJager here aka Filip Verlee // If you would have acces to a timemachine. To which era of gaming would you like to go back for a week?

Hey guys. Have you guys ever gotten together and gone to a discotech with Alex? I figure Rich has the best moves. (thank you for DF, my day is always brightened up by you all. much thanks for what you do.)

What do you think about the fact that all Decima games we've seen so far only lightly utilize TAA?

Hello everyone! Since Pascals RTGI shadders have been added to Nvidia freestyle, I was interested in giving them a try. What games do you think transform the most, and what have been your favourite titles to play with?

Chase

I finally got an RTX card, a 3080ti for msrp. What do you guys think are the best games that have rt features? I want to play Cyberpunk 2077 of course and Amid Evil I've been looking forward to since your video with the devs, but what else are great games with RT? Thanks for all the great work!

tod weitzel

What are some of your favorite freeware/shareware games? Nothing with microtransactions or retail games given away as a free promo on epic, ps+, etc. Examples: OpenTTD, doom1.wad, Ur Quan Masters.

SkillUp's review for Horizon Forbidden West showed significantly more noticeable pop-in than Digital Foundry's. Any idea why that might be?

Anonymous

Regarding the 3DS/Wii U eShop close just announced by Nintendo. Is known that Nintendo don't generate a lot of money with these platforms in comparison with the Switch but regardless of that, this decision clearly impact the image of the company regarding the legacy of digital purchases. Is really that expensive for these companies to still have these stores available to the public? I remember that Sony retracted his decision to close the PS3 and PS Vita Stores due to the criticism from the users.

Anonymous

John, you're an advocate of physical media but also, as a member of Digital Foundry, an aficionado of the best graphics and performance. However, one can't get all these things in one place. Consoles offer one, PC the other. How do you decide which platform to buy a game on?

Anonymous

What lessons do you think that future Playstation games PC-ports can learn from the disastrous launch of HZD (although improved post-launch by original porter and lately a bit by Nixxes) and the great launch of GoW (great post-launch support, but held back maybe by the use of DX11-API?) on PC? Aside from the usual improvements for PC-ports (higher resolution (of effects), uncapped framerate, keyboard and mouse support etc.), what do you think the PC-ports of HFW and Uncharted 4 and maybe even further unannounced ports could really improve on regarding graphics, API, QoL etc.?

Hi, A friend of mine had massive stutters and slowdowns in cyberpunk while using Alex's optimized setting for his RTX 3080. He is using a Ryzen 7 2700 at the moment. I was looking for cpu benchmarks online and they were mostly done at 720 WITHOUT raytracing. And the numbers were well above his average frame rate while traversing the city. I would appreciate a content piece about cpu cost of ray tracing and scaling. It seems in rtx heavy games like metro exodus, dying light 2 and cyberpunkt he gets less than optimal performance not gpu related. Whats the cost there exactly on mainstream cpus and does it get worse with increased resolutions? Is the time of 720p benchmarks maybe over afterall?

Anonymous

If I'm right, some of you (at least John and Alex) are living in Germany. Just to confuse watchers (and maybe even your colleagues?), can you just talk German for a minute with each other? Talk about whatever you want. Also, please read this in German as well haha.

Anonymous

I just fail to see how mouse and keyboard support is an improvement. It is purely a preference thing. Besides, for those, who for some reason wants to use mouse and keyboard option is there on consoles as well as pc.

Anonymous

It seems like Nintendo switch sports is going to be using AMD's FSR. Do you you think this is Nintendo's solution to extending the life of the switch?

Rich

In you conversation with Billy Khan, he mentioned that id software is looking into other uses for Ray Tracing besides lighting (ie global illumination or reflections). Do you have some idea what he might be hinting at? What other implications of Ray Tracing might be on the horizon?

Anonymous

It's amazing to see how well does the Horizon Forbidden West look on the original PS4, however, at the same time it is frustrating to see games not being built exclusively for the newer generation of consoles (aka the PS5). It's been a year and half and the old consoles keep depriving us of the true next-get showcase in the graphical and the level design departments. There aren't any games out now that have the "WOW" effect early games of PS3/XBOX 360 had. How long do you think this will go on before the old gen development finally gets cut out? What do you think are the reasons behind it (financial, rushed next-Gen consoles, chip shortages etc.), and how does the current rate of next-get transition compare to that of the past 3 generations of console releases?

Anonymous

PC question: Do the "power management mode" settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel actually deliver performance altering effects? I've seen so many times in "optimal settings" guides online that they recommend you switch to "prefer MAXIMUM performance", but does that actually result in better performance, and are there any negative drawbacks for keeping your GPU in this mode other than the obvious increase in power draw. Side question: Would Alex ever consider making an "optimized driver settings" guide or is it too niche of a topic to do a video on?

DekkaTr0n

With the seemingly similar game fidelity between the XB1X and Series S, do you think that the future of "optimized" games for the Series S is shakey? Series X and PS5 are definitely pushing things forward, but could the Series S start seeing limited releases?

Any updates on testing Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart performance using a handicapped NVME SSD?

Anonymous

Hi DF squad. What's up with direct storage? It has been months since the launch of windows 11 and neither have we had any explicit mention of the feature nor any game which mentions leveraging the API. As tested from most tech media including DF, SSD speed utility hits a severe case of diminishing returns on sequential speed. Thus we're unable to make an informed purchase decision on fast storage based on a future which never arrives. Shouldn't there at least be a tech demo of the API in win11 already like nvidia did with their RTX features? Why do you think there is such a lack of any proof-of-concept tech demo on either win11 or the consoles for the new storage APIs?

Anonymous

Hi DF team, With the shocking announcememt of the new Alienware Ultrawide QD Oled coming at a modest $1300 with monitors costing double the price being inferior, Do you think we've finally turned the corner in the PC monitor space? I think qd oled monitors are cheaper to make and they're making more of them from failed 55-65" TV yields.

Anonymous

Hi there. Do you think amd fsr would be the better choice for the performance mode of horizon forbidden west? Also put in a 40 fps mode you cowards!

Anonymous

I’ve noticed that some games that support DLSS don’t include an Ultra Performance mode - is this something the developer decides or does NVIDIA work with them to determine whether its suitable or not?

Anonymous

Do you think that Nintendo will attempt to offset the anger over closing the WiiU and 3DS stores by finally bringing Mother 3 to the West?

DanXcel

Hello and good day! Forza Horizon 5, Horizon Forbidden West, and Dying Light 2 have all really pushed the new consoles in their 30fps quality modes. As we go deeper into this generation of consoles do you think we're going to start seeing larger and larger gaps between 30fps quality modes and 60fps performance modes? And do you expect some games to drop their performance modes all together?

Anonymous

Hey guys, with performance or resolution modes becoming common place in games, I frequently find myself wondering why there isn't a mode included that's the quality mode with an uncapped framerate expressly meant for future proofing. Why make it so devs need to make a patch when they could just offer another option and leave the rest up to you? Some (weird) people don't mind wavering framerates, some people have freesync displays, and one day there'll be Xbox Series Y's and PS6's, presumably. What's your take on this, and is this something you'd like to see more of?

Anonymous

I know you fellas are very busy but any update on Rich’s Infinity Ward interview? Didn’t Rich visit their tech HQ in Poland? I’m curious if Rich got a preview of the new engine powering MW2 however I believe it was related to Vanguard. Thx!

Anonymous

Do you guys miss studios like Lionhead and Maxis who made games specifically for PC and didn't try to make their games "consolized"? Of course Lionhead made Fable for Xbox, but I miss The Movies, for example… And who do you think are the main replacement for Lionhead in current Microsoft ecosystem?

Anonymous

With games like Dying light 2 and Cyberpunk offering comprehensive RT settings for reflections, shadows and GI; How much benefit is added by even more comprehensive approaches to bringing ray tracing to games like Metro Exodus's usage of DDGI ? or the on the extreme end of full on path tracing like in Quake/Minecraft RTX. Also do you think that later in this current generation; the more comprehensive approaches will be more common; as opposed to the restricted RT effects for individual aspects of lighting, or is the cost of restricting the user base too high.

Anonymous

Evening gentlemen! I have recently dipped back into Cyberpunk on my PS5 with the release of the next gen patch. I have previously played a couple of hours on my 3060ti powered PC and found the experience with Ray tracing (using DLSS to achieve decent performance on a 1440p ultrawide monitor) to be pretty average. Image quality using DLSS was pretty poor (soft and temporally unstable) and I found the performance mode on PS5 to be much more enjoyable overall. Within a few minutes the lack of ray tracing was all but forgotten and the clean, mostly stable IQ (baring some minor specular aliasing and some weird moir like arftifacts on high frequency textures) was much more enjoyable compared to my experience on the PC. I sometimes feel like the hit to performance to enable RT is not really worth it. My 3060ti would easily trump the PS5 in purely rasterised performance but I bought a RTX card to experience some RT goodness, but even with DLSS I feel resultant IQ is too poor to justify enabling it. Thoughts?

Nico Simmons

Just a random DF supporter here: I can tell you from experience it absolutely does! More precisely tho, you can eliminate issues with uneven framegraphs/"stutters" with this driver toggle. Sometime a game has such a varying degree of scene complexity that the GPU jumps between power profiles and can't always react quickly enough. This is why you _should_ activate this. It forces the highest PP upon your GPU and she will be capable of reacting in a fully "wake", fully clocked state, so to speak.

Anonymous

Now that the Cyberpunk 1.5 Patch is released, do you have any plans to dive in and do a comparison video? Also, any chance of updated optimized PC settings from Alex? Thanks

Anonymous

Hi, everyone! With Horizon Forbidden West about to release, would there be any chance of a DF special sit down with Guerilla Games? It is my personal opinion that this is one of the best "complete" packages as far as game series are concerned, and it would be incredible to learn more about their process.

What do you guys think of Nintendo Switch Sports potentially has AMD FSR implementation? Will you look into that when it releases?

Anonymous

With Nintendo’s recent comments that Switch is only mid way through its lifecycle - do you believe that a Switch Pro is still coming or that Nintendo will wait it out for a true Switch 2/something else that is still just backwards compatible with the Switch. It is frustrating to have the Switch look so bad when hooked up to a 4K TV. Especially when you see that the assets they already use tend to look great at higher resolutions… I saw a 4K video of Metroid Dread on YouTube and it was astounding!

Anonymous

Is it possible to add AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR) to Xbox Series S/X and PS5 or even SteamDeck? If it is, could developers release this in future patches to already released games?

Anonymous

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Check out any Youtube or other video on it that is as lossless as possible DF themselves might have a patreon exclusive video on it, I can't remember

Anonymous

No question here, just wanting to express my appreciation for the awesome Horizon Forbidden West coverage that John (and Richard) have put out this week. There has clearly been a lot of work that you guys put into this and it shows. Thanks for doing this!

Dylan

Do you think VRR support in TV's is ever going to matter for consoles? HDMI 2.1 compatibility has been less than great for many TV's.
