The Dressing Gown

What is your most hated game(s) and why and what is your most loved game(s) and why? Also would we be able to get a video where you each show off some/all of your physical games collections? It could maybe be a patreon exclusive mini series where you talk about some of the games in your collection, somewhat like the retro pick-ups?

With Intel's XeSS being somewhat GPU agnostic, do you have any thoughts about the technology being implemented in PS5/Series games/consoles (assuming it delivers on its promises)?

ConcreteLlama

Dear Physical Founder, One year into the current generation of consoles, what's your take on the still apparent and unexpected performance differential between the two systems in favour of the PS5? It doesn't affect every game and the differences are often minor but it is still not what I expected. Do you suspect (or know) that this is still teething issues with the GDK, or are we actually seeing that the PS5 does in fact have some hardware advantage? Lots of love ConcreteLlama

You often say that the DF Patreon program changed a lot for the whole team. Can each of you go more into details ? I'm asking because it's not every day we encounter something as big as Patreon that can improve internet's quality of content and quality of life of its creators, instead of reducing it, like social medias must-have-behaviors or ads everywhere even in the content itself do.

Hey DF, Why don't you release any HDR content anymore ? More and more device are now able to properly read them. You don't seem to mention the quality of the implementation either, do you feel it's not worth it ? Thanks ! :)

Hi DF, would like to know your thoughts on the on-demand Texture Streaming used Call of Duty. Is this the only title that uses this tech and are there any compromises to the quality of the textures?

(zehn-er) How long do you expect live service games from the PS4/X1 generation of consoles to continue supporting the old gen hardware before eventually (if ever) moving to exclusively PS5 & X Series support.

Anonymous

I mean surely COD Warzone and Halo Infinite won't continue original Xbox One support forever.

What game(s) do you think will the first to support DirectStorage on PC?

What is the worst rage quit you ever experienced?

#Alex - what's the best Currywurst joint in Berlin?

Greetings gentlemen. I've been patiently waiting for the release of the Steam Deck and Digital Foundry's inevitable hands-on coverage. I can't help but wonder if the device will represent the pinnacle of what's possible in the handheld gaming space, and if there is any further room for advancement. In your opinions, will reduced power draw and battery limitations prevent the production of more powerful portable devices?

Entonces DF (interested to hear Rich talking Spanish), With the Steam Deck coming soon, it got me thinking about older games that can take advantage of the new hardware, or even breathe new life, despite being available on Steam for years. Do you consider the existence of proper killer apps that justify buying a Steam Deck? My biggest concern is that a nifty device like the Steam Deck can become a liability like its earlier siblings, Steam Machines and the Steam Link, if the experience is not transformative enough.

This is an Alex question, so hopefully he's on the weekly: What is the performant difference between a game developed around rasterization techniques with RT added for lighting/shadows compared to a game developed entirely for RT? In current-gen consoles, is a mix of these techniques going to provide for better visuals and performance, or would going full RT and removing the legacy approach be the way to go? Exodus did the full RT transformation, but I'm not sure whether the question of blending techniques versus replacement has been discussed by DF otherwise outside of the development advantages.

With XBOX's backwards compatbility updates and the GTA "remaster" debacle, do you think remasters are even necessary? Would we prefer older games modernised, or simply presented in the best possible way? I think it raises an interesting question on video game preservation, the closest analogy I can think of being the Original Star Wars trilogy vs it's Special Edition. Many people would have liked to have a pristine copy of the OG trilogy, but that is not longer possible. This to me is analogous to Rockstar de-listing their OG trilogy, with their new "Definitive Edition" being the only way to legally play it digitally. Which isn't ideal.

Word, DLSS et al seem to be at a very good place for a relatively recent technology in the real-time graphics space. Do you thing that the ultimate end point is all games will be rendered at 1080/1440p and be AI upscalled to 4K? Kev

Gentlemen *tips hat* I've been thinking about legacy protection for video games after it was raised on DF and writing to my MP to raise the issue of conserving what I see as our cultural heritage. What practical ways are there of achieving this? Is it going to take legislation, forcing the big companies into preservation, or do think gentle coersion is the way to go?

Sven Dahlin

I am personally not fond of “open world” games. However, I have come to like “wide linear” games (in addition to “linear” games). “Wide linear” is a middle ground and it could make financial sense for developers and publishers to move in this direction. What are your opinions on this? I also think it would be interesting if you could compare the hardware and game engine challenges and requirements for different type of games? (maybe in a separate video)

Hey there, I remember John mentioning that the studio behind The Touryst are from the demo scene. Did you ever cover the demo scene or are you planning on it? I would love to hear more about that and Shin‘ens involvement . I find the studio and their work quite fascinating and some context would be appreciated. Have a good one!

Is there an opportunity for a non windows OS similar to RoKu for all the various services… ie steam etc. ?

Is having a stable and consistent frame rate in online focused games really that important? Because games like GT Sport can have some serious drops in performance, would love to know your thoughts.

Hi team, in your opinion if the ps5 gpu was 44cus at 1825ghz (10.3tf) would it be better or worse than the 36cu 2230ghz(10.3) final unit? or just depends on game/situation?

Like many of us I’ve been impressed with Forza Horizon 5, but I do feel like you may have been a little generous in your evaluation of it. This is due to the fact that we ended up with two unpleasantly compromised choices on Series X. A quality mode with the compromise of 30fps, and a performance mode with the compromise of very noticeable LOD transitions. I feel like there should have been a lower resolution option, with settings much closer to quality, but at 60fps. Do you have any insights into why we didn’t get that third option?

Hi team! Why is "good" HDR so elusive, especially on PC? It has been around for years at this stage, is visually transformative, and top tier implementations on console (Gears 5, Forza Horizon 5) look stunning. Yet many PC versions of games (Life is Strange True Colors is a recent example) struggle to get it working at all. Thanks! 👍

Hey, DF! As we head into the second year in the life of the new consoles, can we finally put to bed the biggest discussion of the last 12 months? I'm obviously referring to the "which current gen console is the most powerful" conundrum. Interestingly, Sony and Microsoft seem to have taken different approaches to get to the same target, as gaming performance so far has favored one or the other in a remarkably split fashion. Can we call it a tie so everyone can finally calm down?

Imagine a world where COVID-19 has mysteriously disappeared and Rich has agreed to divert some funds away from building the death star to shout everyone a DF retreat. Where would you all go and what would you do? Are there team members who haven't met in person before e.g. Tom and Audi?

Have any of you looked at the performance of halo master chief collection lately. Halo 2 anniversary in particular has terrible performance on the one x and series x. What does the team think is causing these issues and will 343 ever fully fix them on the consoles?

Anonymous

For Call of Duty Vanguard, can you explain the On-Demand Texture Streaming option as it relates to the console. Does this mean that once they take the servers offline textures will be downgraded for the single player campaign? Why is there no option to be able to install the high quality textures rather than download them?

Do you expect games designed to stress the storage and IO architectures of the new consoles to require creative solutions to run well on a wide range of PC hardware? In particular, Alex brought up before that a game that really puts PS5's IO bandwidth and decompression through its paces in order to perform well could present challenges in creating an accessible PC version, and I was wondering if he could elaborate on that. Could this be overcome by cranking up RAM requirements, or would Direct Storage largely alleviate an otherwise massively heavy CPU task? Thanks!
