Could you please share a clip of the DF intro sound? I'd like to make it my notification for the Patreon app.

Ryan Harvey

Hey DF, do you guys have any thoughts on covering Final Fantasy XIV? The game has expanded onto the third generation of consoles since it came out from PS3 to PS5. The game has come a very long way, and should be somewhat accessible to cover due to the free trial. Would love the DF look at the new PS5 version that released yesterday!

Is one of you interested in the new Atari VCS ? Why ? (whatever your answer is 😅)

Do you have any opinions on the state of gaming on Linux and what do you think it will take for developers to publish native Linux ports?

Luke

So, I'm not really into all of these specific abbreviations and graphic effects (?) you often use in your videos and I think I'm not alone. Have you ever thought about making (short) explanation videos for amateurs like me? Or maybe some captions? If not, why not?

Anonymous

Hey guys. How do you organize your work day? Do you force yourself to work like 8 hours straight or is it more split up and spontaneous? What is the most time consuming part of your work?

Ben McSkelly

Sony heralded the "tempest engine" for audio on the ps5 launch, but I haven't (ahem) heard much about it since. Any views on whether it will sound off again soon? Have devs not had time with it yet or does it need the pandemic to end so that users can access physical booths to train the settings? Or was it just a fad?

What are your DF producing war stories? After hearing Tom talk about playing through Mass Effect on multiple platforms, settings, and games, had me wondering just what are your production horror stories?

Do you think a "DLSS for framerate" would be possible? Using machine learning to double framerate from 30 to 60... I know a non ML attempt, using vectors, was made for Star Wars Force Unleashed but it was dropped from the final release, proprably because of the added input lag from doing this. Could ML help output a cleaner result with less input lag? And BTW Rich if you have that demo of the Force Unleashed running at 60fps with frame interpolation in your archive, that would be great to see in good quality!

Do you think the original artistic vision is getting lost when a developer adds Raytracing to a game which was designed with Rasterization in mind? Especially when the lighting changes. Metro Exodus comes to mind where e.g. cutscenes could look wildly different. Although this has been the case for a long time (on pc anyway) because graphic settings could change lighting.

Do game streaming services reduce the perceived value of a game?

What are your thoughts on the rumored Valve "SteamPal" handheld gaming PC? I'm curious about your predictions on what performance targets it could meet with its 9W AMD "VanGogh" APU codenamed "Aerith." It will supposedly have 4 zen2 cores with 8 threads and 8 RDNA2 compute units. Also, it will be running Linux rather than Windows. How do you think Unreal Engine 5's new AA solution called Temporal Super Resolution, which is claimed to give 4K quality at 1080p resolution, will compare to DLSS?

Anonymous

My loyal 1080p PC is starting to look a bit blurry when compared with Series X on a 4K TV. If retail price was an actual thing that could be believed and I had around $500 to spend on a 1440p card for single player games, what would you recommend?

Anonymous

Wait till October, cheap cards will flood the markets then (since Ethereum will switch to PoS then). Buying a GPU now is stupid.

Ben McSkelly

This is a great question. Could be a short form video series on its own!

Anonymous

Will AMD's FSR (when it arrives) be compatible with older titles or do games have to be built with it as part of the code?

Anonymous

The apparent lack of rollback netcode in VF5US seems like a massive oversight, from a user experience perspective it would be on a par with releasing an action adventure or FPS on current gen with an uncapped framerate that constantly dips from sub 60 to below 30 FPS. What kind of thinking or prioritisation do you think is going on at Sega and other fighting game developers at the moment with regards to this (eg SNK with samsho)? They seem to be off-the-mark on this in such a big way.

I have a slightly technical question, so probably for Alex. You're often talking about forward and deferred rendering in videos, but I don't think you ever really explained what that really means. Could you explain what are the differences between those two ways of rendering, and what are the main benefits / drawbacks of using one or the other?

Eric Hurst

This question is for Alex: If consoles didn’t exist and games were only played on PC, meaning all games were hardware agnostic, do you believe that we would see newer technologies, for example virtual geometry in unreal engine 5, appear sooner in games since they wouldn’t be dependent on the mainstream use of them being tied to the hardware spec of consoles? SSDs have been mainstream on PC for years now. Do you think this technology would have been possible to implement years ago?

Question for John. Given that Sony has received some criticism lately for being overly stiff and corporate in their communications with fans, would it be a wise move for them to bring on Chad Warden as an official spokesperson for PlayStation? I'm curious to know your thoughts as a retro gamer with nostalgia for the brand's edgelord marketing roots.

As Microsoft appears to focus a lot on backward compatibility enhancement (One X enhancements, FPS boost, autoHDR), do you think we can see stuff done on OG Xbox and 360 (like their Heutchy Method) applied to One games (I recall Rich talking about a 2K upscale of Gears of War Ultimate) ? And in the other way around, do you think FPS boost and autoHDR is possible on OG and 360 BC games ?

Anonymous

We've yet to have a "next-gen" racing game, as far as I know. Considering the cumulative nature of raytracing, are racing games like the upcoming GT7 and the next two Forzas at a RT disadvantage, compared to most other games, especially in lighting? That being said, how excited are you for GT7's photo mode?

Jay Fischetti

Rich, I read your old article about Exhumed. The praise you had for it was tremendous, and having played the game recently - spot on. Do you still think highly of it? Do you think if that original Saturn version gets released the game should be held up there with Quake and Duke3D?

Who has the most bomberman cred and will you settle it with super bomberman online

The Doom source code was released in December of 1997, about 4 years after Doom's release. id released the Quake source code in 1999, or 3 years after Quake's release. id even released the source codes for Quake 3 and Doom 3. We don't expect Doom 2016's source code to ever be released. Do you all think much is lost by the fact that this doesn't happen anymore, or do you think the availability of things like Unreal, Crysis, and Unity engines are enough to fill the void?

How long and how expensive was it to collect all the Jaguar games for the next DF Retro?

Anonymous

In the light of the news about Uncharted 4 coming to PC, do you think it will come out before a PS5 patch? Would be interesting to see 60fps in Uncharted 4 on PC before PS5.

Anonymous

Is any of you interested in the Atari VCS ? Whatever your answer is : but why ?...

Anonymous

Auto HDR already works on 360 games. For example Crysis 3 has it.

Anonymous

Why are some games like Balan Wonderworld poorly optimized on the Switch while others like Crash 4 are well optimized on the Switch?

Anonymous

The most important question - of course directed at John is, do you think Shenmue 4 will utilise UE5? We know Suzuki plans to work on Shenmue 4, but I guess we'll see

Anonymous

Do you think that RT reflections should be implemented with more filtering/distortion than is typically currently applied? The RT reflections in a lot of recent games look good but are often quite aliased and visibly low-res. Distorting these reflections, similar to how SSR is usually rendered, could overcome these issues, albeit at the cost of accuracy.

Which game within the Hong Kong action genre should I play? Sleeping Dogs, Stranglehold or is there anything else?

Anonymous

Nothing else as far as I know, Martin. Start off with Stranglehold then progress to Sleeping Dogs, which is insane.

Eurogamer just published an article positing that Switch Pro may be out Sept/Oct this year, citing a Bloomberg article: "the Switch is able to avoid the more serious chip shortages which have affected PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as it uses different components." Can you glean anything from that about what level of performance/chipset they could possibly be going with? Eg. it's unlikely/likely they'll have tensor cores / 14nm fab / Blast Processing™ ?

as a former Jaguar owner I vacillate between not caring and attentively awaiting their answers... 😅😂 edit: to be clear, I find the suggestion that DF Retro would spend more than a minute thinking about the Atari Jaguar incredibly hilarious for some reason but not nearly as much as thinking "hey, it's been about 25 years since you touched that horrendous controller. Perhaps your annoyance with it was inverse nostalgia and the intervening time has been very kind!" and then clutching my guts in laughter...

Pardon the non-tech related question but this whole thing burns me more than it probably should so I’ll ask anyways: What are your thoughts on epic games making EGS exclusivity deals with publishers in the PC market? The reason it burns me so much is it comes across as the literal definition of anti-competitive by preventing a competing store from offering a game (well, many games now) to customers which allows for actual proper competition in the storefront / service space. Ubisoft and blizzard / activision have their own launchers (Ubisoft connect, battle.net) but those storefronts offer up games that pertain to each respective company, not hosting games from other publishers. Xbox has their own and also hosts third party games but they don’t make said games exclusive to that launcher. Anyways thanks for reading this. Love you guys and am thankful for all that you do. Y’all helped keep me sane through 2020!

Anonymous

EGS-exclusives are very much *not* the definition of anti-competitive. Game publishers and developers that have timed or permanent exclusivity on the Epic Game Store do so by choice, they decide the value proposition offered by Epic's terms outweigh their estimated sales from being hosted on other/multiple PC storefronts. Epic's store already offers an 88% revenue cut to developers versus Steam and GOG's 70%, and presumably timed exclusivity nets them some other bonus on top. Nothing is stopping Valve or CDPR from attempting to compete, and Epic isn't throwing around money that those companies don't have, buying out publishers and forcing long-term contracts, so don't treat it like hostageware just because you don't like the store and don't attribute words like "make" or "force" to Epic's side when these exclusives are the results of decisions by the dev/publisher.

Anonymous

So would it be ok for Steam to use their billions of dollars to do the same thing? What if Steam started approaching publishers and offered them $ to obtain exclusivity for 100+ games that are slated to launch in 2021? Wouldn't that prevent EGS from being able to compete?

Martin Birkeldh

I just found out that there is the Hotline Miami inspired The Hong Kong Massacre too :)
