Hello everyone! It's that time of the week again, where the Digital Foundry team bring up the DF Direct Docket and start filling it up with the discussion topics of the week. And it's going to be Rich, Alex and Tom chewing the fat over various news stories. John is very busy working away on the next DF Retro episode but will hopefully return next week!

Topics up for discussion this week include Mass Effect Legendary Edition, 'that' GTA video circulating that uses machine learning algorithms to add a realistic sheen to the game, plus of course, Days Gone on PC, amongst other things.

The Supporter Q+A is our favourite part of the show, however, so get your questions in!

What are some of your favorite true-oddball games? For example, Caution Seaman, was one of mine.

Do you think 60fps will remain commonplace in AAA development once the cross gen period is over?

We've yet to have a "next-gen" racing game, as far as I know. Considering the cumulative nature of raytracing, are racing games like the upcoming GT7 and the next two Forzas at a RT disadvantage, compared to most other games, especially in lighting? That being said, how excited are you for GT7's photo mode?

What is the origin of Richard's family name? I imagine his great, great grandfather immigrating to the UK and making a name for themselves by promoting Pb to Petroleum and Paint companies. "If you have trouble deciding, just think of me, 'Leadbetter'!"

How much will the consoles RT performance affect PC's RT quality in the long term? E.g RE8

Haven't seen this discussed a lot, but the install size difference on PS5 version of games compared to the ps4 is quite substantial in several that I own. Most recent example being outriders, 40GB on PS5 vs 70GB on PS4. What are DFoundrys thoughts on these file size reductions and the choice of an 825gb ssd vs a standard 1tb sizing for the ps5 by Sony. Also will Digital Foundry do a video on this as I've found the storage on PS5 being much less of a problem than I anticipated due to the smaller file sizes of next gen games.

Outside of Quake 2 and Minecraft, we haven’t seen any announcements of RT remasters. The results of full RT rendering are very compelling and the feature is now supported by consoles as well. What’s the holdup?

Edit: I went and had a look through psn for some numbers. I pulled these straight off the PSN store today (except Control Ultimate Edition, I don't own the PS4 version so the PS4 install size was from a pre-release article on the games launch). Several developers provide a next gen upgrade for free so you can download either the ps4 or ps5 version when you buy, which is how I was able to check the install sizes on a PS5. The PS5 versions are all native PS5 games, not the PS4 version running in backwards compatability. They're the most up to date build of the game reflecting all updates. PS5 titles and their install sizes: Borderlands 3(PS5) is 51.1gb. PS4 is 62.183gb. Control Ultimate Edition(PS5) is 26.11GB. PS4 is 50gb. Avengers(PS5) is 82.43gb. PS4 is 73.917GB. Outriders(PS5) is 39.36gb. PS4 is 67.840GB. No Mans Sky(PS5) is 11.729GB. PS4 is 13.788GB. Warhammer Chaosbane(PS5) is 11.328GB. PS4 is 15.716gb. Spider-Man Miles Morales(PS5) is 39.17GB. PS4 is 54.236GB. Destiny 2(PS5) is 74.68GB. PS4 is 70.636GB. Last but not least 😉 Genshin Impact(PS5) is 18.840GB. PS4 is 25.607GB.

'That' GTA video was pretty interesting and the more colourful clip at the end does end up looking pretty good. What's an example of a game you think could benefit from this type of machine learning photorealistic texture database thing?

Anonymous

Would you share the short tune that plays at the beginning of each DF video? I'd like to set it as the notification sound for the Patreon app.

Neko

Are there any games you would personally like to see remastered in the same way that the Mass Effect Trilogy was? Ie. Improved textures, lighting, some tweaked gameplay elements, but no major changes to the underlying structure of the original game?

With the Unreal 5 techdemo being a year old now; what are DF's expected timelines to see realtime in-game graphics that match the demo's fidelity? My own 2 cents: given that the engine is far from mature and producing (AAA) content for that level of fidelity, I would argue that we might hit that that late-gen (2025ish)

Do you think the 6nm ps5 will use liquid metal or the traditional use of thermal paste will be enough with additional cost savings?

Anonymous

Have any of you looked at the Tilt5 technology for table top xr? Also, are you familiar with the CEO Jerry Elsworth? She is legendary. Worked at Valve. Built the original C64 in a stick which inspired many copycats. Understands the tech in VR better than almost anybody. You really should do a massive feature especially considering their Kickstarter getting ready to ship.

With image sclaing and ray traced global illumination being the most sought after technology for game development, will these features make high texture resolutions redundant in the near future? If not, then are there any alternate solutions for texture quality that do not consume as many resources as 4K or 8K textures?

Microsoft, and to some extent Sony, have established a clear online strategy, Nintendo on the other hand hardly explained its approach. What do you think Nintendo should have as part of its digital strategy?

Anonymous

Can you talk about the DLSS and RTX implementation in AMID EVIL. Thanks!

Do you think that when we get to mass adoption of PCs / consoles with hardware accelerated ray tracing support, and when game development therefore defaults to using ray tracing features, that we will see the gap narrowed between triple A development and smaller studios when it comes to visual fidelity? Given that ray tracing can produce superior “out of the box” results to compared to meticulously crafted baked lighting. Also, do you think this will lead to smaller development teams, or will the major studios shift their manpower to other aspects of game development where they will have an edge?

What is John's favourite Sega Saturn game? Perhaps a Western and a Japanese title. PS The world is very appreciative of, and thankful for, Rich's answer. 🙏

Would it ever be possible for backwards compatible games to take further advantage of new hardware? / Could you delve into how backwards compatibility works that creates the restrictions we see for PS5 and Xbox consoles?

Anonymous

What kind of games do you guys enjoy outside of work? Maybe each one mention what games you played and enjoyed recently (doesn't have to be a new game)

GENTLEMEN! I come seeking answers! Why does the frame rate boost on backwards compatible Xbox One games have to remove the Xbox One X enhanced patch in most cases? Some games drop down to 810p, such as Titanfall 2, yet others, such as Shadow of The Tomb Raider, keep their One X enhancements AND have their frame rate doubled. There doesn't seem to be any logical consistency to it. I enjoy the feature, but that choice as a player is a tough one sometimes. Either way, stay beautiful!

Are there any PS4 (or PS3) games that you would hope to see get a PC port, or an enhanced port for modern systems? Partially related, I personally would have loved to see a sequel or new iteration of Modnation Racers. The original release had such a robust track creation tool but the game's horrendous load times was its Achilles' heel. The PS5's loading times would eliminate that problem, and perhaps give it new life.

Hey guys. Really enjoying the content on Patreon. Anyway, do you think Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series X will use Fidelity FX? Also, are you concerned that we haven't really seen any gameplay footage yet despite it being scheduled for release this summer?

Luke

So, I'm not really into all the specific abbreviations and graphic effects (?) you often use in your videos and I think I'm not alone. Have you ever thought about making (short) explanation videos for amateurs like me? If not, why not?

Anonymous

Are there any games that had critical acclaim that you personally did not enjoy or could not get into?

Anonymous

In your experience, have you found the PS5 to be more or less reliable than the PS4 at launch and do you think software issues with the OS are holding back features such as VRR and support for expandable storage etc.

Anonymous

Technically, can ps5 runs PS vita and ps2 emulators? if so, can it provide a boot mode?

Anonymous

Thank you guys for all the great content. Do you think we'll see more games like Metro Exodus Enhanced edition?, and what graphical implementations would you like to see developers focus on after Ray Tracing?

Anonymous

Activating the Time Machine here and going back to the Commodore Amiga golden years, what was your favourite games, and what do you think it was the downfall of such amazing machines?

Anonymous

Hey guys! Pick 2 things for the next gen consoles that you would improve or fix. These can be as feasible or not as you like, software or hardware related. Just to head off the obvious pick for all of you, no one is allowed to say a 4K/120 release of Crazy Frog Racer.

What’s the biggest lesson about capturing gameplay you’ve gleamed from your careers at Digital Foundry so far?

Any plans to cover Amid Evil and it's new RTX update?

Why are some devs on the Nintendo Switch awful in terms of porting? examples Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Balan Wonderworld?

The iPhone and iPad GPUs continue to get stronger each year, and nVidia buying ARM will probably cause massive improvements in the rest of the low-power SOC market. At what point do you think the "mobile" term as applied to games should simply be dropped? (This question started as "so what mobile games do you have on your phones?" but I felt that wasn't much of a discussion topic. But answer it if you want!)

When you look at the last generation with a lot of 30fps games, one thing that stands out to me is that the games that have 60fps is usually first person. Looked at some stats and from my count of this list. (Not counting remasters) 13 games first-person 60fps while only 8 games were 3rd person and those 3rd person were usually cartoon graphics and the 2 Metal Gear-games we got from Kojima. So my question really is: Is it generally easier to get 60fps (or higher for new consoles) when in first-person than in 3rd person games and why?

André Scheffler

Have you ever considered to add 5.1 channel surround sound (as a 2nd track) to your videos? As I watch most of your videos on my TV in 4k for the best visual experience, it would be nice to get an adequate impression of how the game sounds (Returnal comes right to my mind).

H.H.R

What's your least liked game you ever gave a positive technical review to, and what's your most liked game you ever gave a bad technical review to?

Everybody's skill at making videos has increased since they started. What would each team member like to include in their videos that they haven't yet? Not talking about the comparison per se but more the video editing skill.

André Scheffler

Could you do a deep dive on VRR and the different (proprietary) variants? As 120Hz TVs with VRR are becoming the norm even at mid-range prices and the Xbox and the PC being able to handle it, this is, at least for me, a game changer, as I was never interested in the highest frame rates, but in smooth frame times.

Anonymous

Could you guys explain the difference between mesh shaders found in the Xbox/ PC graphics cards and primitive shaders found in the PlayStation 5.

Do you think you’ll ever do an episode/feature on sound setups? I personally have been having so much trouble with audio delay on any setup using a soundbar. I’ve regressed to built in TV speakers because I’m so sensitive to audio lag. With games having such rapid response times it seems sound systems are much better catered to the more delayed cinema/TV experience. Would be great to get a feature on best AV audio setups for console and/or PC gaming!

Dear DF crew, I know there is a love of physical media within the team. I watched a video recently discussing in depth DRM issues with Microsoft’s consoles and backwards compatibility. I know John has mentioned this a few times but would DF ever do a more in-depth feature on this topic as it has real implications on how people purchase content. A lot of consumers might not be aware how extensive an issue it is or how backwards compatibility isn’t actually truly compatible. Sony seems to get a lot of bad press regarding this issue but it doesn’t seem to apply to running PS4 discs in a PS5.
