E3 Wrap-up Part 1 (Patreon)
Content
First up, over the next few days, we'll have a lot of additional E3 content. I was on the floor capturing goodies left and right including plenty of 4K footage from the Xbox One X along with all of the new Switch games, among others. We're going to post both the normal edited videos here but also straight gameplay so you can appreciate what the games might look like when played on your TV or monitor.
Also, wanted to share some thoughts on the show this year. It was, after all, the first time E3 was open to the public which made for a much busier show but also one that was loads of fun. I met a lot of new people while on site - if anyone here stopped by and said hello, it's always appreciated!
Although the show was officially open from Tuesday through Thursday, things started earlier than ever with EA Play taking place on Saturday, Microsoft and Bethesda on Sunday and so on. It was a very busy week!
The Xbox One X was obviously one of the bigger stories of the show and it's great to see it revealed at last. Unfortunately, while my experience with the system was great, there just wasn't as much content available as we would have liked. Forza 7 is gorgeous and easily one of the best looking racers I've ever played, Assassin's Creed Origins looks and runs like a dream on the Xbox One X dev kits right now, Super Lucky's Tale was charming but still has a few performance dips and Madden is looking nice as well (first year on Frostbite).
Had a really nice time with Sea of Thieves this year. It was my first time playing the game but it has a great sense of adventure and awesome water and sky rendering features. The way the clouds roll in as a storm approaches is really awe inspiring...and this was just on an Xbox One S.
Also played the full line-up of Nintendo games, which I'll have more on shortly, but it's shaping up nicely. Mario is indeed awesome though it has its fair share of limitations at this stage. I'm sure it'll be polished up for launch, though.
Bandai-Namco had some surprising stuff as well. Ace Combat 7, which I'll be doing a video on this week, was incredible. It genuinely feels like an update to Ace Combat 04 and 5 from the PS2 era. It has a few performance issues at this point but it's shaping up nicely nonetheless. The VR mode was pretty amazing too.
Ni no Kuni 2 is another surprise - it's now and action RPG rather than turn-based but it's also 60 frames per second. So, yeah, it runs a lot smoother and feels quite responsive as a result. I got capture of both this and AC7.
Dragon Ball FighterZ was impressive - as it should be coming from Arc System Works. Very active camera work, looks like 2D animation most of the time and plays well. Not a huge DBZ fan but I really enjoyed playing this one.
Also played some Far Cry 5, which is indeed more Far Cry. I played it on a PS4 Pro running at an enhanced resolution. The performance is still rather iffy at this point but it still has time so I wouldn't be too concerned. It's a nice visual jump from FC4, though, and the addition of planes allows you to fly way up into the clouds.
...I think I'll leave it there for the moment but there is a lot more to discuss coming up! Feel free to ask any questions.
