Bonus video! I take a look at an aspect of AD&D that has gone out of fashion lately; henchmen.

Even back when 1e first came out our group never had Henchmen, not sure why...but we never did. The same for multiple characters for one player, not something we did. Working on an old school mega-dungeon campaign (something else we never did) and will make sure to stress henchman and hierlings.

Love having henchmen. I almost exclusively DM these days, but I encourage henchmen, especially with smaller parties. With a large party, things can get pretty unwieldy if everyone wants one or more.

Much like Mark, our 1e groups never really used henchmen. When I ran 2e, my players sometimes hired a henchman, but more often than not, they were never utilized. I personally like using henchmen and have played with them when I played in a couple of 5E games. It really throws younger DMs for a loop. :)

My 1e party has a Thief henchman who doesn’t work for any particular PC. If a player is unable to make it, I will let their character be dragged along as another PC’s henchman (1/2 combat XP) if both players agree in advance.
