UPDATE // An overview of July! (Patreon)

Hello Patrons! I'm back with a little monthly update on what's been going on here on my Patreon page. It's the end of the month, so I figured it was a good time to look back on what I've been posting throughout July! 

LATEST TUTORIAL // Painting clouds 

This month's tutorial was about clouds, which seemed like a fun topic to me because they're a great jumping off point to discuss a few essential design principles. In this tutorial, I talk about hard vs. soft edges, rhythm & shape variation, and overlapping shapes - principles that apply to a wide range of subjects besides clouds! If you're interested in learning more about that, definitely check this video out ~ you can also draw along from the same reference image! Since it's my latest tutorial, it will be available on the $5 spark tier for another month! After that, it goes to the backlog, along with 37 other tutorials which flame members can access for $10.

Next month's tutorial is going to be on poses, and I'll be doing paint-overs for that one! If you struggle with poses, check out this post for information about how to submit your artwork for the tutorial. 

JULY DRAWING CHALLENGE // mountains

This month's challenge was on mountains, and it was definitely a challenging one! I think many of us are character artists so it's always hard to make that switch to environments. The patrons who participated made some incredible work though! I gave it my best shot with these speedpaints. 

As always, flame members also got access to the process videos and a resource video with tips and advice. Next month's challenge will return to the human figure, and will be on gesture sketches! THIS MONTH'S ART // 

This month, I got back into making some rough ideas and thumbnails for more detailed paintings. I realized I needed to reboot my creativity and come up with some new ideas that I could continue to work on for the coming months. Above are a few ideas I had for a series of paintings! I already started working on the third one. If you're curious about how I come up with new ideas for my paintings, I talk about it a bit in this month's Q&A session for flame members! I also give a sneak peek on the progress for the painting during the session.

I also created an underwater-themed painting! Above is a close-up from the final artwork. I love how water can serve as a metaphor for so many things, and creates an introspective mood. I also posted two process videos for this one: a screen recording and a recording from my phone. Definitely check those out if you're interested in my process for painting underwater scenes like these! 

DISCORD COMMUNITY

The discord server is my favorite place to hang out with other artists! This week we shared our summer-themed art and talked about our art school experiences in the discussion threads. Our mod Sabina hosted another figure drawing session, and of course we all vented our frustrations about the changes happening over on twitter which has such a huge impact on the online art community. 

Honestly, my favorite channel has been the memes-and-gifs channel. It just always puts a smile on my face! Here's one that I'm sure many of you can relate to. Thanks Adrig0 for sharing it!
