Here’s the process for my reflection painting once again, but this time recorded with my phone! I make recordings like these to make reels and tiktok videos later on, and for this one there was enough material to create a longer process video as well. It’s not the full process, but the majority of it is here. If you want to see the full process from beginning to end, check out the screen recording in this post!

Some information about this process video:

  • It's been sped up by 300%, so three times the original speed.
  • This painting took me about 3.5 hours to make in total.
  • I mainly used brushes from my own brush set - particularly the hard round one. You can find the brush set here.
  • At the end, I copy-paste some underwater photos onto the image and blend it in to get a more convincing underwater look. I got those images from unsplash.
  • If you want some helpful resources to make a painting like this one, you could check out my tutorial on rendering water using minimal tools.

I hope you find it helpful and as always, feel free to ask if there are any techniques here that you would like to know more about! It's always helpful to hear such feedback when figuring out what my next tutorial will be on!

This piece is absolutely beautiful, really love the theme of self reflection. We need more of this in our day to day lives as it will help us grow our awareness. 🩷

i'm so sorry to hear that rachel! have you tried viewing it on a different device or browser? if that still doesn't work, let me know and I can try to find a different solution!

I really appreciate the thoroughness of your posts. I love water pieces, so was particularly absorbed with this one. One quick tech question, tho, if you can spare a moment: After you "flat" the figure, you achieve tonal variations by selecting and adjusting. There is a gradient effect that results, tho. Is that from adding a feather effect to the selection?

Loish

hey james! yes, I use a feathered lasso tool for that, as well as gradients!

Anonymous

how do you make this gradient that expands and passes the limits of the selection?

Loish

i'm guessing it's because it's a feathered lasso! if i have a feathered lasso tool, then there's a bit of a softer edge around the selection. let me know if that answers your question!
