I put together a quick video showing the procreate timelapse of my plant studies! The main phases of the sketches were basically:

  • 01 // rough sketch - just blocking out the basic shapes.
  • 02 //  base color - blocking in a square with the base color unerneath the rough sketch.
  • 03 // sculpting the shapes - painting on top of the whole thing and trying to work out the shapes of the leaves, stems, grass etc.
  • 04 // detailing - with a smaller brush, trying to work out sharp edges, bring more contrast, and painting the finer details.

For some of them, I felt like step 3 (sculpting shapes) was bringing too much contrast and sharpness to the painting and so I would go over the whole thing with a messy brush and kind of start over from there.

The brush set I used for these is the Gouache Maxpack

Thank you! :) [ Later edit: I'd love it if you'd consider this subject as a draw-along or tutorial for a month, because it's hard to follow without access to your thought process, making sense and putting an order in all that chaos, and particularly in Procreate I'd like to see specifically each tool that you use. :) ]

I am always so amazed by the way you paint plants. Such a simple subject and yet it's so fascinating. Will you ever do a live stream on plant studies like this one? I'd definitely watch that <3

The first minute is the most interesting to me. Love how you almost seem to chisel the shapes into existence :D I wanna do a study like this as well now!

Insane how you just paint shapes so easily out of the colors.
