Here’s some sketches from a live drawing session I did with some other artists! The model didn’t show up so the artists modeled for each other, and the day turned out to be a success as a result! I personally prefer to draw clothed models because I like studying how the clothing folds and bunches. Although proportions and likeness remain a struggle for me! Sessions like these are always frustrating but rewarding :) Do you ever draw from life?

Live drawing has not been done by me in a long time. Not since my Ai art classes.

I love how you ended up posing for each other, what a positive outcome ❤️

So cool! Its awesome that you posed for each other for drawing! I still have yet to go to live drawing session, seems like a lot of fun!

I draw from life models every Wednesday. We have a lovely life-drawing event in Tallinn, Estonia called Drink&Draw. Stop by if you happened to be in that region.

drawing from life, is one of those drawing challenges you have to face. Simply because.

Lion Art Studio

When I was at art school I was 15, we had models come in twice a week into this studio flooded with beautiful, natural light…. But, I hated it, was terrified of the whole thing… which sadly affected my whole outlook & I wouldn’t draw peopleif my life depended on it. I was younger than all the other students by years & found it very embarrassing, I couldn’t even look at the models, little less draw them. They were always nude, & it got so bad I would skip the classes. Wish I could travel back in time & take advantage of not only the amazing studio space, but the models. I love drawing people more than any subject, & I’m fortunate to be working in this industry now… but trying to catch up on the 20 or so years I didn’t draw a single thing has been hard. Esp as it’s been blown right open with far more artists to contend with than back in the day. Love these sketches, the way you’ve pushed the length of the subjects… they are so elongated & elegant, they feel almost alien, with human features… just stunning. Hope you work some up into full illustrations.

Lately I've been getting back into drawing from life too. Glad I'm not alone in preferring to draw clothed models. Nude models always seem like a bit of a waste of time to me, because I never draw unclothed people outside of those life drawing sessions, so like, what's the point?

I would love to join some life drawing classes but I am not sure if there are any. I live in Utrecht as well, maybe you know if there is something in the area? :)

i don't know any in the utrecht area but i can recommend schets sessie 2.0! https://schetssessie.wordpress.com/

thank you, I'm glad you like them! 15 is really young to be at an art school. i can imagine that must have been stressful to go through. live drawing is really vulnerable and it's so much about not being afraid to mess up. i definitely wouldn't have been able to get myself in such a mindset at that age! i'm glad you got back into drawing since that time though!

sounds fun! i first encountered drink & draw on a boat in berlin!

Oh wow looks really interesting! Thank you for the suggestion :)

It's anatomy and figure study, the foundations of figure drawing really. Should always draw the form before the clothes so you have a better understanding how the fabric will bunch up and flow. Also shows how the shape of muscles change with different movements.

I feel the same way about clothed models! It would be so helpful to see the clothes and how they move with the model. But it seems like a much less popular class for some reason! A group of artists that take it in turn to model is actually really clever, and a good way to save money if you're not ina privileged position to pay for a class with models.

yes! although i think it's asking a lot of those artists, haha. i personally find it way too terrifying and vulnerable to model for a bunch of people :')
