Some tooth and mouth studies! This is something I think about a lot when drawing characters: how much detail to add to the teeth and mouth without getting an uncanny effect? Drawing the gaps between each tooth tends to create a really weird effect, but I also really like stylized art that shows more detail in the teeth to create believability.

So here are some studies where I tired to find ways to show the detail of the teeth but also simplify them to some extent so they don’t look strange! The next step is to make some character sketches with more detailed lips and teeth, which I want to make soon!

These look so good! How difficult.

Those look really good, and its a good theme at least one I struggle much with. And showes off that it is to learn how to make the beauty with your struggle.

OMG! You are the best!!! I always avoid them 🤣

I struggle with this too! Most of my art has lineart and if you outline every tooth it looks weird and creepy af ahah. But I don't want just a big single tooth in each mouth either! I find animal teeth are easier because then you can just outline the jagged line where they meet and it creates in the implication of multiple teeth without drawing every single one.

I love these studies. Did you use reference?

These are super nice studies. I hardly look away and these got me staring each time I login. Man, the teeth biting the lip part kinda turns me on.

yeah. i guess that's where beauty standards interfere with our ability to draw what we see, since too much detail on the teeth is not culturally accepted in a way.

I think a big part of it is that teeth are, at least in Western culture, seen as creepy. Too wide of smiles, dirty teeth, spooky random loose teeth on the ground in a haunted house, etc. So overly detailed teeth read as creepy (and i think also sometimes as dirty since you have the dark bits between them)

Ooh I love these! For some reason they reminded me of Lady Gaga haha. But yeah, like you I tend to worry about how much detail should be added around the mouth when its open. Teeth are weird lol.

Ooh I love these, I've had the same struggle! Looking forward to seeing how you translate this to character sketches.

These surprised me a lot (in a good way) - so clearly in your style but not something I had expected to see from you. Very strong and almost loud. Your pieces are usually very calm and serene.

I get what you mean! as I was drawing these I was really surprised by how different it is from my usual work just because open mouths and teeth showing is so fundamentally different from what I normally draw.
