This is part 2 of the process for my Ice painting! You can find part 1 here. Just like the last video, it’s been sped up 1.5 times - so slightly faster than real time.

In this video, I’m trying to go through the layers established in the rough version and clean them up one by one. I also try to boost depth and create more impact as I go, although that’s very much a trial-and-error process.

The main challenge was making sure the cracks in the ice look convincing. I figured out a method for this: I would draw a fine line showing the crack on the surface, and then underneath that, I would draw a thick stroke with a textured brush - in this case it was the “techelou” brush from this brush set. After drawing this textured stroke, I would select the bottom of it with a feathered lasso tool and apply a vertical motion blur. This gave the feeling of the crack fading into the depths of the ice which I felt worked really well!

After that, it’s a matter of making sure the other layers are cleaned up and have a finer degree of detail so that the image looks more finalized. In the case of this image, it was all about making sure that the details were in balance with rougher and more blurry strokes that worked well to establish a sense of depth - so basically not taking it too far!

The last part of this process is coming right up in a minute!
