It’s time for this month’s tutorial! It’s about sketching, and specifically about how to keep your sketches from becoming too heavy or stiff. In this video, I talk about:

• Which tools I use

• Common misconceptions that hold artists back while sketching

• Useful techniques for sketching - like using the blending stump and contour hatching

• The 4 main stages of sketching in my process, from first lines to the finishing details

• Importance of accepting roughness, mistakes and imperfections

• Suggestions for sketching exercises

I also mention a few artists whose sketches have inspired me a lot. They are:

• Eliza Ivanova: https://www.instagram.com/eleeza

• J.A.W Cooper: https://www.instagram.com/jawcooper

• Jana Schirmer: https://www.instagram.com/janaschirmer (you can see her older sketch work on her deviantart account - https://www.deviantart.com/janaschi/gallery/scraps)

• Gretlusky: https://www.instagram.com/gretlusky

• Iris Compiet: https://www.instagram.com/iriscompiet

My reference image was from AdorkaStock and can be found here: https://www.deviantart.com/adorkastock/art/Floating-Magic-Staff-Pose-Reference-for-Artists-712359715

Some other tutorials that may be helpful after watching this one:

Constructing a pose: this one goes into more detail on which basic shapes I use to construct a character.

Creating interesting & flowy shapes: This one talks about how I use shapes to construct my artwork but also detail and finalize it. I use many of these types of shapes in my sketching process, especially now that I “fill in” forms with the blending stump more than I used to!

Also, if you want to see more of my sketches, feel free to browse the sketchbook tour tag - there are 5 sketchbook tours that you can watch!

As always, I hope you enjoy it! The subtitled version can be found here.

May I ask you a question? Can you please explain just a little bit further the way you differentiate volume/form and value/light while using the stomp? Because you said at the beginning that you don't only use it for shadows and light but to convey form. But conveying volume is directly dependent of the lights and shadows. How do you exactly chose where you're gonna shade a form (like a finger or two) and where not ? It looks more to me like design choices than realistic forms or values. Thank you SO much for this beautiful tutorial and your generosity to share your thoughts and magnificent art with us!

Loish

hey! I just try to wing it to see what looks right. I just stick to a generic lighting setup and try to think about how I can convey form above all else. I guess they are intuitive design choices in the end!

Hey Loish, thank you so much for this tutorial! I challenged myself to sketch for 30 minutes throughout 30 days, but found that most of my sketches were actually just thumbnails of bigger pieces that I wanted to make. Now, I’m finally getting into the rhythm of making some rough and fast drawings to convey an idea quickly before moving on to a finished piece. Sketching is still very uncomfortable for me, but I’m hoping to get used to it by the end of this challenge. Do you ever create digital sketches or do you try to just use the sketchbook? Does it even matter if we don’t enjoy using traditional materials?

Loish

hey clarissa! that sounds like a great way to accumulate ideas for finished pieces! you can always work through them at a steady pace, finalizing the ones you find most appealing. I create digital sketches all the time! i think the overwhelming majority of my paintings started as a digital sketch. I think you should use any materials that feel natural to you, it's fine to avoid traditional if it limits your artistic freedom!

2023-06-23 08:55:05 I really appreciate your live drawing videos where you're filming your hands as well, I would LOVE more overhead cintiq/sketchbook videos. I don't know about you, but for me I find it pretty challenging to draw freely while recording, but seeing your hands moving, switching tools, etc adds so much depth to watching your process!! I'm a new patron and just blazing through your process videos, it's so mesmerizing and inspiring to watch and always sends me into a super long sketching session afterwards lol. Also, I think maybe about a year ago you posted an instagram story about your blending stump, so I bought one and same as you, it totally transformed my sketching process and made it so much more fun!! Loved your work since I was a kid and it's been really cool to see how your art has changed and improved over the years. Sometimes I see artists with a large following figure out what works and they end up stagnating - not that that's really a bad thing, but you stick out to me because you seem to always be hungry for new knowledge, and improvement, and you aren't afraid to keep experimenting. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your invaluable insight! <3

Loish

thanks so much for your kind words and for the support here on patreon! i'm glad you enjoy the video content :) I'll make sure to post more process videos where you can see my hands while I'm drawing!

Thanks Loish awesome tutorial! I like the idea change from shading into drawing the volume... you mentioned the volume in other tutorials but I never saw it so clear as in this one😅 have to try it right away👌🏻

Thank s much for this video. I love the depth, honesty and reflection. The dialogue you create here is very valuable, als for someone like me who has been drawing for a while and needs pointing out certain pitfalls :) Xx Daan

This was awesome! I had no idea that lead came in H or B for mechanical pencils! The whole line weight thing is def the part I still havnt really adapted yet in my sketching

I love seeing your traditional medium work process. This is something that is hard to document and I appreciate the quality you put into the production. Great video editing trick on 22nd min when you showed all the stages of the branch drawing and the materials you used ant the side. And I was LMAO on 42nd minute when you brought that joke of Ethan Becker about drawing hands.

Danica Robbemond

This was so interesting. I can't wait to try some new things! :)

Pierre Brown

Holy crap, I needed this. Thanks! I’ll definitely be visiting this one often.

Loish

haha i'm glad someone spotted it ;) thanks for your kind words!

Loish

thank you! it's definitely not obligatory, you could swap line weight for higher detail density for example. it's all about leading the eye!

Jayne Arcane

As someone who has been wanting to get back to her sketchbook after only doing digital, this came up at the perfect time! Some super awesome tips in here and I'm really inspired to practice now! (Also loved the Ethan Becker reference there ! When in doubty, one finger outie!)

Loved the process, it made me think a lot about incorporating more volume to my sketches and drawings. I've never learned how to sketch, so it was really great. I was sketching your girl along on my own style and -- Well. There's no way I can sketch a person properly if I don't know my anatomy well enough. Not I didn't know this before, but there's always this secret hope hahah. When you said it requires a lot of practice -- well. It really does. Just need to find a way to keep that grind interesting enough to get there...

Loish

yep, it takes time! I did get a lot of questions about anatomy though, and I'm thinking of making an anatomy tutorial at some point which is more technical than what I usually do (discussing proportions etc) to address those challenges!

I suddenly want to scrap my plans for the day and just experiment in my sketchbook. 😏 In all honesty, I really needed to watch this and listen to your advice. With the easy access and plethora of digital tools, my sketchbook tends to get left on the shelf, but it needs to be opened and filled with ideas. Your advice and tips made things so much clearer, as they always do, and it’s appreciated. Thank you for making this tutorial!

2023-05-01 12:47:01 This was so great and so inspirational as I'm trying to get back into my sketchbook more frequently! I pulled out a blending stump after you first posted about taking inspiration from Eleeza and even got her book and looking at both your work always makes me so excited to just dive in and sketch <3

Because of this tutorial I bought a sketchbook after unusing sketchbooks for years. Now I see how helpful it is to find a personal drawing style.

Thank you for creating this tutorial! I was struggling a lot with the mindset of finalizing sketches, but I was losing the looseness and flow with all my line work. I’ll definitely take all the tips to mind! Also, “When in doubty, one finger outie” was that an Ethan Becker reference?! 😆 Amazing!

Milla Sky

thank you Loish! Very useful, very practical and at the same time very inspiring! Thank you for encouraging to mistakes and freedom!

Loish

haha yep! I think about that line every time I draw a finger sticking out. his critique was absolutely justified :')
