To finish off the #mermay themed art for this month, I had to draw my favorite one: Ariel. I’ve drawn her so many times and wanted to tackle her with my current skillset! This one started as a sketchbook sketch, which I scanned in and added digital colors to (and changed her face and hair quite a lot in the process as you can see!).

By the way, I finished up this month’s tutorial on sketching,  and I’m just waiting for the subtitles to come in! I’ll be posting it in the coming days ~ have a great weekend everyone!

She’s beautiful! Would love to know more about your process of creating the backgrounds for these. They are so pretty without taking away any attention from the main focus of the image😊

Am I seeing a shift towards iridescent/holographic palettes? 👀 I love how sketchy all your recent works have been! Also, I'm absolutely in love with her tail. The range in colors here are just *chefs kiss*

Gorgeous! 😍

I love every single version of Ariel you've drawn and it always captures so much the essence of why I became an artist as well and love mermaids :D it's a very beautiful rendition - I especially love the colour of the tail, it really pops!!

Ah so beautiful! I was hoping you were going to paint her this year <3 I love all of the ariels you've done over the years, but I think this one's my favorite.

For the coloring you used only your Hard round Brush?

Seeing this in my feed made me surprisingly emotional 🥺 After following you since you started on DeviantArt, it's perpetually absolutely amazing to me how you still manage to improve so much between every Ariel painting. It's SO cool to see how your style grows and changes with each one, and somehow they always keep getting better. I remember when you submitted this on DA - https://www.deviantart.com/loish/art/happy-bday-dee-ayyyyyy-15833275 and I thought it was the highest level of digital art imaginable for months 😂 You continuously amaze and inspire me so much! Keep up the fantastic work 😄

Ahhhhh this is so wonderful! Ariel is one of my favourite Disney princesses, she was so spunky and adventurous and curious, I lobe her so. You've done her amazingly!! He personality just vibrates off the page (or screen, rather).

Loish

yes, that's exactly what I loved about her too! the fiery personality and the curiosity. so adorable! glad you like it :)

Loish

haha thank you so much! i remember making that one and being super proud of it at the time. really appreciate that you've supported my work for so long :)

Loish

yes! and the lasso tool too. I'm putting together a process video for this one so you'll be able to watch the process for it soon!

Loish

yesss haha I've been really into using overlay layers and lasso tool adjustments to make the colors stand out more. and to keep a bit of roughness in there too! thank you for the kind words!

Loish

thanks sophie! I'm putting together a process video for this one so you can see how I did it. spoiler: I copy/pasted it from a different background that I made for a sketch session! which usually just starts with a solid color and then I use the lasso tool to add variation to it so that it feels more vibrant.
