Hey patrons! Just a quick update about the vimeo problems I posted about earlier this week. I knew that Patreon was working on a video hosting tool directly through the platform, which is currently in Beta, so I reached out to them. They generously made this tool available to me and also migrated all of my existing videos directly to Patreon, saving me so much stress and anxiety! They were so incredibly helpful and I'm so grateful to them! A small handful of videos are currently not working yet, but they should be up and running soon.

There's one downside to this: their beta video tool doesn't have a way to implement subtitles (yet). So I'm looking into alternatives for that, and trying to figure out a way to be able to share the subtitles with users who need them. There are a few different possibilities, so I need to figure that out in the coming days. If you have any tips, please do reach out or comment below with them! As soon as I have a solution, I'll post an update about it. And if you run into any issues watching video here, please reach out and let me know! Thanks so much for your patience and support 🖤

I'm so glad you got that problem out of the way.✨ With the subtitles I am one of those people who need them because my English is not very good, I even wanted to tell you if there is a possibility that they had the option of being translated into Spanish. Thank you very much in advance!🥰

thanks for your comment! unfortunately I can only offer the content in english for now, so sorry about that. I will keep you posted on the english subtitles though!

Awesome! So glad Patreon’s been here to help you out after what Vimeo was doing to you. And after this whole fiasco got Cartoon Brew’s attention, it’d be nice if Vimeo learned a lesson from this and started treating creators better and not just driving them out in favor of their precious corporate clients…but I doubt that’s going to happen. That said, I’ve been seriously considering ditching my Vimeo Pro subscription for a while now, and with this, I might finally just do it.

yes, it's being picked up by a few well-read platforms, which I'm happy about! yesterday I wrote a huge wall of text to vimeo explaining why this experience was so frustrating to me and some suggestions on how they could communicate this differently in the future. the person I sent it to really took it to heart, so hopefully someone else doesn't have to go through the same thing in the future. I do think they are fully behind their decision to go 'corporate' so if you're just using it as a video sharing tool as a creative, it might be wise to look into other options, since the site will be prioritizing the big corporate clients rather than their indie creatives!

How exciting! I did hear a little bit about this. I can't wait for it to be fully decked out. Good luck, Lois! You got this! 🤗

If you want, you can find people who will write subtitles for you for some amount of money. It is a lot of hassle to do it though. Another way to do it would be by using AI. There's softwares out there that can create automated subtitles for you. That's something you can look into.

Yay!!!

Loish

thanks for the tip! the subtitles are actually already generated, but they just can't be displayed on the patreon video player right now. hopefully that will change in the future!

Love that it went smoothly!! 🍻

With the subtitles, for those who need it i find that live caption features of chrome in accessibility settings was helpful, pretty accurate. I use it in with video without subtitle or in discord call, so i will 100% recommending it but still having actual subtitle is 10x better.

Can you work the subtitles into the actual video editing process? As in, don't rely on the platform's CC integration tool (or lack thereof), but instead put the CC text into the bottom portion of the video screen during editing. I used to do that a lot for clients as a virtual assistant. It's a bit tedious, but it works and makes the content much more accessible.

That’s great. I hope to support Chinese subtitles, so that I have a better understanding of watching videos. I didn‘t understand all the painting skills after watching your video before.

Loish

that is definitely an option I was considering too, to just bake them in. thanks for this advice!

Loish

unfortunately I can't offer subtitles in different languages at the moment, but I can send over the subtitle file which you can translate yourself! let me know if this is something you would like!

Loish

that's interesting! I was thinking of looking into chrome or browser extentions to load in the subtitles, I saw that this was a possiblity as well.

Loish

they hit me with a really high bill for having too many viewers! and since I have other options I'd rather just move elsewhere for now.

Yes, that‘s great! The subtitle file is completely enough. I can translate it by myself, which will be very helpful for me to watch the video. Thank you very much!!!

You could add the srt files in the folder shared at the month end along with the video

Loish

yes! I always share the subtitle files along with the video but I'm trying to figure out if they can be loaded in if I upload them separately.

There is an issue watching on an iPad. If you don’t finish the whole video all at once an error will occur when you return to it. The error will continue no matter how you refresh the page or close tab and return from a fresh search. Very bizarre.

Loish

that's very strange! do you have that with all the videos? I will definitely pass that info on to patreon! For now, I just posted a list of video links to watch them on vimeo with a password, you can find that post here - https://www.patreon.com/posts/update-subtitled-64518198

It happens with all videos. But I switched apps and works fine. So as above but only for iPad Pro safari version. Still weird though

Loish

very weird indeed! I will pass it on to the patreon team, they should definitley fix that.
