I’ve been using really smooth moleskine paper to sketch for many years now, but it makes the lines really definitive and sharp, which makes it difficult to blend and smudge. So I pulled out a watercolor sketchbook and tried that instead. I really liked how that felt - it made it so much easier to create blended shadows and use the stump to get some more depth and volume. These are all just some random heads for now but I’d love to try this techinque for a more detailed piece, or maybe as a starting point to scan & turn into something digital.

Lately I’ve been super inspired by the art of Eleeza and Chris Hong, who create so much volume in their work! If you don’t know their work yet, you have to check it out. It’s because of them that I’m wanting to do more traditional stuff lately.

Hope you like these and I hope you guys all have an amazing weekend :)

Up early or late Loish?

Eleeza is a really amazing artist, her lines are so unique! Whenever I pull out her artbook, I feel like also taking out my moleskine and a pencil haha! There’s something about traditional art that feels so familiar and I think we all keep returning to it every now and then, as if we went back to our roots.

here in the netherlands it is actually around noon right now :)

i agree. i think it's just the more tactile feedback we can get from it. also the fact that it's away from a screen and less prone to distractions like checking email or social media. it's very soothing to me!

I've been doing just that recently! <3 It looks wonderful, and it indeed is very pleasant to work with. It happened a little on accident - I was traveling and didn't have other sketchbooks, so I started drawing on this kind of paper. Turned out as a great idea. Wishing you lots of fun and fruitful experiments with traditional art <3 Thank you for sharing!

I immediately thought of Chris Hong when I saw the one portrait where one eye is more rendered and detailed than the other. I thought I knew how to draw portraits, but her Skillshare class on leveling up portraits just blew my mind.

Loish

YES! i love how she keeps some areas low-detail. it's just amazing. i want to take that skillshare class!

Loish

thank you! enjoy your watercolor paper experiments too :)

Same, been outright stealing some of Eleeza's style and tactics. I also went and grabbed a lead holder, I love the weight of it! Its messy, but I am getting the hang of it. She makes it look so easy to keep things clean. :D

I love Eleeza’s work and how soft and flowy her lines are! I think you interpreted her influence well!
