Here it is: this month’s tutorial on painting and rendering in Procreate, with new and improved audio quality, and as always, with closed captions! You can watch it in 4K quality if you want - just click the gear button to adjust the resolution. This tutorial picks up where I left off with the previous Procreate tutorial, which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-video-42911573

I use a lot of different brushes in this process, but don’t feel pressured to use the exact same ones in your painting process! It’s not essential to buy brush sets to get a certain painting effect - you can get great effects with the default procreate brushes as well. Here’s the brushes I used in chronological order:

• Maxpacks Gouache Clean

• RazumInc Pro II Shade

• Maxpacks Gutterpunk (from the gouache set)

• Maxpacks Chunky Inker (from the comics set)

• Maxpacks Gouache Detail Smooth

• Macalabs Procreate Ink

Again, these brushes aren’t essential for this painting process, but if you wanted to invest in a brush set for digital painting, I recommend the Maxpacks Gouache set since it has so many different styles and textures in just one set. Here’s links to all of the brush sets I used in this process:

• Maxpacks Gouache: https://gumroad.com/l/GouacheMaxPack

• RazumInc pro II: http://cbr.sh/ai2y9?ref=loish

• Maxpacks Comics: https://gumroad.com/maxulichney#vLcSf

• Macalabs Procreate: http://cbr.sh/sndsf0?ref=loish

A quick disclaimer: I created this one in Procreate, but the techniques can be easily applied to Photoshop or any other digital drawing software. So if you’re not a Procreate user, you can still use this tutorial for your painting process! The only difference is the brushes - in Photoshop I would use the Macalabs HB brush and hard round brush to get the same painting effect, and probably use the lasso tool a bit more. For an overview of the brushes I use, including Photoshop brushes, check out this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-i-34615265

Hope you guys enjoy this one! Let me know if you have any questions!

In case you are too lazy(?au cas où t as la flemme?don't know if it's well formulaire) to read all of the previous concrete block just thank you very much💜

Anonymous

And I have a question How much do you put the stabilization of your Strokes?

Loish

I don't have any kind of stabilization on as far as I know! mainly because I usually don't really create clean lines in my work so I feel that I don't need it!

Loish

happy to hear that! that's a good thing for me to keep in mind when creating these tutorials!

Piotr Kostecki

So excited to see it!!! Thank you! ❤️❤️

Anonymous

This is awesome, can't wait to watch to the end. Thank you, Lois! Also, can I just take a moment to appreciate your audio being super crispy and creamy smooth? Seriously, I didn't mind *at all* the audio in previous vids but still your effort to make this sound good was so worth it. Thank you for leveling up your sound for us! <3

YESSSSSS! WATCHING AFTER SCHOOL! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼💕

Thank you Lois for this video! ❤ I was just rendering my art, and I got so dissolve into it. I love rendering skin but the hair... I tend to get too detailed 😅 I should try doing blobs too, then get into details. I've been studying with your videos, I have to say using the color adjustments is a game changer for me. Thank you for that too!

Thank you💖

This is great, thank you!

Very excited to see another great Procreate TUT! There is a lot to be said about just picking up a portable device and creating something you can be proud of.

Anonymous

Woojoo! So excited about this!!

Anonymous

Thank you so much for this! One thing I also do in Procreate for a gradient type BG is use the Soft Brush that comes with procreate at the largest size and gently paint that in from the bottom or top. :)

Anonymous

Absolutely amazing tutorial, thank you so much 🖤✨💌

Your tutorials blow my mind every time!! I’m a relatively new Patron, but you have changed my art so positively. Thank you!!!❤️❤️

Can't wait to follow this tutorial later tonight : )

I really loved seeing the process of you going from a simple sketch to a more "painted" piece, it was very instructive.

Anonymous

Oh my god, so excited to finish work today and dive into it!

Loish

good tip! the ipad has incredible pressure sensitivity, so it's a lot easier to recreate a gradient effect with brushes than it would be on a cintiq (at least that's been my experience).

Loish

yes! and the portability makes it easier to just doodle mindlessly, which is what I love about it.

Loish

i feel you, i also get carried away with the rendering sometimes and then i zoom out and think.. why did i do that?? haha. it's a constant struggle! i'm glad you're enjoying the videos!

Loish

I'm so glad you like it! it definitely makes the editing process a lot easier for me haha. the bad sound quality had my stress levels way too high while preparing the video for you guys.

I love this artwork. I love loish. Her art is amazing. Truly a blessing from God. Thank God for blessing her talented hands. I wish I was able to download this artwork to make it my wallpaper

Anonymous

this was so helpful!!! wow I feel so stuck by my sketches but I really can break that pattern!

Anonymous

When you mention adding too many shines and making everything smooth... oops... guilty😂😂😂 and adding sparkles in procreate is way too easy hahahhaa

Anonymous

Thank you so much! This was so informative, interesting, and chill to watch :)

Anonymous

This was so helpful! Thanks for taking the time to walk through your process so clearly.

Lion Art Studio

Hey Loish, you are one of the first artists that inspired me to try digital.... which I love & has lead me to a career as an illustrator. However I’m still learning (I don’t think that will ever change, I’m never satisfied & need to keep improving on my skills) & haven’t really developed my own style yet. My biggest issue is breaking away from realism.... I only started working in portraiture 2 years ago, & concentrated on fundamentals & anatomy. Now I’m trying to figure out how to bring more stylistic choices, I find it still reverts back to more realism than I want. When you started, did you draw more cartoon type of characters or more realistic? The thing I adore about your art is the energy & life each piece has..... my work is so static, & I inevitably overwork it & make it more stiff every time. Your comment about detailing & making sure the time adding specific details is worthwhile.... if it adds to art or in my case takes away from it, was a lightbulb moment. I knew it, but hearing it from you it’s finally sunk in. I will be more thoughtful about my decisions when rendering. Thank you.

Loish

hey! I'm glad this helped ~ I think letting go of the mindset that everything needs to be perfect is already a big step in getting more expressiveness in your art! my early art was very stylized. you can find a lot of it here: https://blog.loish.net/post/21430440784/old-art-and-layouts but everyone's art journey is different and it's perfectly ok to go from a more realistic drawing style to something more stylized!

I will need to go watch the part 1, but I wanted to say, thank you for all this. I cannot believe I have not known about you for so long. I recently heard the podcast you did in 2016 with Youngman (The Creative Push). I loved everything you talked about which pushed me to sub to your patreon to learn more from you. Thanks again for all you do and I cant wait to binge all these videos :D

Loish

thanks so much! i'm so glad you like it and I'm glad you enjoyed the podcast interview too!

Hi Loish! I have a question. I’m having a hard time implementing your techniques into my own art and this is just because of my learning style. I was wondering to start off slow, what would be the first step into building a painterly style? I don’t want to give up my lineart/ line work but I love the smooth and organic feel of how you paint.

Loish

hey lauren! I'd definitely recommend going back to some of the older tutorials. the one on choosing colors shows the fundamental steps of laying down colors and adding some simple detail: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-colors-39277902 especially the end part about merging everything together and just detailing on top will help build a painterly style :)

Anonymous

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely start there!

Anonymous

Thank you, Loish, this was so interesting! Next to your great tutorial as it is, I also learned a lot about e.g. using the colorpicker with your left thumb, 🤗 such things also make painting so much easier. The painting turned out georgeous as always!

2023-06-13 05:39:20 Hello Loish! Long time subscriber... I used to follow your art in the early 2000's when I was in high school and everything was on Deviant Art. You are still my favorite artist to this day, and I appreciate these tutorials so much! <3 I had a question - What size canvas do you generally start with? I work a lot in procreate myself, but I think I tend to go too small with canvas size & dpi, which of course leads to more pixelated art than I prefer. Thank you!

hey stephanie! thanks so much for your support over all these years! I usually start with about an A3 size canvas, with 300DPI. i think it's important to work as big as possible without compromising computer speed / workflow!

Icy

I think the biggest benefit I'm getting from these videos is realizing that you don't have the piece "figured out" right from the get-go. I'm always so pleasantly surprised when artists I admire actually go through trial and error to reach a finished piece! Thanks for sharing your process, I'm learning a lot.

Loish

thanks for your kind words :) yes, most of my drawings are trial-and-error honestly! i think it's important to just go into it with a blank slate and see what happens, so that i don't get stuck / paralyzed from pressure i'm putting on myself!

Anonymous

Amazingly explained and sososo helpful, thank you for this!!! I always tend to overrender and overthink stuff in general, so my goal is to let loose a bit an come closer to what you were talking about 😌 can I maybe ask you how you upload your pictures from procreate to insta so they donˋt lose quality?

Anonymous

I enjoyed this very much, thank you! So I'm at an impasse with my art skill. Long story short, how did you overcome the over-rendering phase? More specifically, what was it that enabled you to distribute the focus on other parts of the image rather than get sucked into the over-rendering wormhole? Thanks!

Loish

i think it's a mix of different things! doing lots of rough sketches and studies always helps me train my eye in the appeal of rougher work. setting a time limit on rendering helps me prioritize certain areas and decide to leave other parts rough. and generally just being critical and not being afraid to take a step back when it starts to get an over-rendered look. hopefully this helps!

Anonymous

This does help! I've started using a subconscious timer when rendering after I watching this tutorial, which lended itself to being more mindful of the process instead of zoning out. Think thats where I fumble --I stop breathing, get cock eyed and lose myself in one area while neglecting the rest. That and I really could open myself up more to rough sketching, honestly there's an aversion but I think that comes with wanting that instant gratification of a polished piece --not very realistic though. Thanks, I've got a lot to consider :)

Anonymous

Love the Matrix pieces, have you seen Animatrix? Incredible art and animation, I recommend to everyone!

Loish

i get it, it's so tempting to get lost in the meditative feeling of rendering! and there's nothing wrong with that, unless you're not happy with the end result.

Anonymous

This video was so helpful! You formatted it very clearly and I learned soooo much. Thank you!

Any discounts on max pack brushes please?

Loish

unfortunately I can't give out any discounts! but be sure to follow max ulichney on social media, i'm sure he'll announce a discount at some point.

Anonymous

Beautiful, mesmerizing and inspiring. You really pack a lot of valuable information in these tutorials. The way you paint hair is just fantastic and there is such a feeling of movement along with the fish wrapping the character. I'm hoping I can capture some of your magic to make my own work better. Thank you so much for sharing.

Anonymous

This was really really helpful in understanding how to build a process that works for me. It's nice to see that even people who are creating these incredible pieces often have intermediate steps that look odd or uncomfortable, and to see how the painting changes a LOT throughout the process.

Loish

happy to hear that! I think that's true of all my art.. there's always a phase where it's just 'off' and i gotta hack at it to make it work :)
