Here it is guys, the long-awaited procreate tutorial! I filmed it in 4K quality, for those of you who have 4K screens and wanna see the iPad screen in max detail! Just press on the gear button to adjust the quality.

The brushes I used during this video were:

• Razum_inc Pro II shade upd 1 from the RazumINC brushpack.

• Gouache Clean from the MaxPacks Gouache set.

• Gouche Bristle Gritty from the Maxpacks Gouache set

• Toothy Inker from the Maxpacks comics set

I refer a lot to previous tutorials for more insights into my drawing process. I’ll link them here:

Constructing a pose: I talk about how I build up a full-body pose, from rough sketch to more detailed sketch.

Construcing faces & expressions: very similar to “constructing a pose” but more focused on the head and expressions.

Choosing colors: I talk about how to pick colors, and using an intuitive process which involves modifying the colors a lot and using your observation to make the right choice for colors.

Simple tricks for lighting & mood: I talk about modifying the colors and adding lighting effects to an existing character sketch.

I hope you guys like this one, let me know if you wanna see more tutorials like this and if so, what kinda stuff you’d like to see in them! Then I can include them in next month’s tutorial poll :)

Thank you〜〜〜😭✨✨✨‼️ありがとうございます‼️

Aadishri Soni

Thank you so much loish.. this video was a suprise❤️❤️❤️

Anonymous

Thanks so much for this! I'm so used to CSP and SAI that I get really frustrated when I use Procreate. Really excited to try some of these techniques and brushes now.

Mrs Gilbert

Love this! And they do have the gradient maps, it's under the filters :D

Loish

yes! it's cool they added them. but it's a different tool than gradients.

Thank you for this video and the other procreate process videos you released recently, they form such a nice little course. I have only yesterday evening come around to look at the second process video for the commission and am currently trying to apply what I learned in a little study. I very much enjoy this combination of tutorial video and step-by-step graphics you made for the commission. It‘s a little like having a lesson in which you can look over the artist‘s shoulder along with a visual hand-out to remind you of the steps while working. When you say, that you choose a 3000x4000 pixel canvas in procreate due to the layer-limitation, does this mean that you usually work on a larger canvas size? Also, I am not sure if you noticed, in procreate‘s gesture settings there is an option to prevent accidental finger-painting, so that touching the screen with your finger will only count as gestures.

Anonymous

I love it!! Your process is amazing and so didactic. You make it look so simple, thanks!

Anonymous

This must be the mysterious 52GB big process video. 😱

Anonymous

I loved this video! It was entertaining AND informative! Keep it up!

Anonymous

I loved watching your process! I’m such a big fan! When you add the glowing effect to your art, do you create a separate layer and then combine with hard light/screen filter or do you just play with the saturation/ brightness?

Anonymous

Thankyou so much for the video! Your process makes me feel less intimidated when it comes to digital work. Fantastic work and a nicely engaging tutorial. 💫

Anonymous

Thank so much for this🍒

MarcyRangel

Thank you so much!! And yes we all would love to see more tutorials videos! 😍😍 could you maybe do one about perspective? Or how to draw backgrounds... these two things are my greatest weakness 😭😭

Anonymous

Just plain and simple thanks! I love everything you come up with. xx Aastha, India

Anonymous

This was a gem! I'm so excited to have this information now, so I can apply it to my artwork. Actually after watching the video, I worked on a portrait for 40mins and tried to apply your methods and I loved how it turned out! I wish there was a submission box so we show you our improvements!

Radka Kopecka (radu.k.art)

Thank you, Loish, for such a great tutorial, I really love how you can make all the lines and adjustments with such ease, it's pleasure to watch you draw :) I would really appreaciate the paiting part in Procreate too, as you suggested. Here's a little tip from me: You can change or completely remove the distracting lines when using selective tool - it's under Preferences list, there is a slide called "Selection mask visiblity" and you can turn it down :)

Anonymous

Hey Patreon friends! I'm wondering if anyone has already or would be interested in forming a private Facebook group or something? ((I've been scanning the feed to see if anyone has suggested this yet and I haven't seen anything but I know I might've just missed it. Please let me know if I have!)) It would be nice to have a space where we can share the work we're making as we learn from these amazing tutorials & content w/o leaking any info. It would be nice to be able to check-in, see how people are interpreting things, and get feedback. Especially when it comes to nuanced skills that are key to the things we're learning (spotting lack of visual flow, etc.)

Mrs Gilbert

Ooh I had no idea haha, I figured it would work the same. Hopefully procreate can make their version of the PS one then!

Anonymous

This is so cool and i learned a lot but i think its a good idea to take a video about rendering process, i love u keep going <3

Lauri Panopoulos Lauridesign.com

Thank you for this tutorial and for explaining your process in such detail. II'm aware there's a layer limit in procreate but do you feel there's an advantage to working in a dpi higher than 300?

Lauri Panopoulos Lauridesign.com

Also, for future tutorials what do you think of one discussing your organizational system? Perhaps part of it on your digital file management system for artwork and references and another part on how you organize loose traditional sketches? Would love to see how you approach this.

Jonathan Phillips

Wow. This is exactly what I need. Been stumbling with art and procreate specifically. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Jonathan Phillips

I know other patrons have Facebook groups where fans post work. I believe they are open to encourage more art fans to find the artist. I agree Loish would be a perfect fit for something like that if willing. Right now I am part of a private art group under Roger Dean (He is starting an art school and I took the first class). I do find everyone posts into the group, but then publicly anyway. So a public group serves more a purpose (and again, would bring more people to the Patreon for the private posts from the artist) win win

The opacity thing: different brushes have different rendering modes, hiding in the Rendering tab in Brush Studio. The official default is light glaze, and uniformed glaze is the one that’s closest to Photoshop default, but there’s 4 others. The Gouache Clean you like uses Intense Blending, and the rendering modes that mention blending work better with the effects on the wet mix tab. For bonus fun, you can get interesting opacity effects if your brush uses burnt edges. It’s a whole thing working out all the possible opacity effects. Max did a pretty awesome Lightbox Expo vid https://youtu.be/FLnXSxx_0TE running through a whole bunch of how the brush engine works and what kinds of things to try when you get a new brush pack. It’s promo for his retro set, but it works with any set, including the stock brushes. For a budget alternative to your sketch brush, I use the stock Chalk brush a lot. It’s got a similar hard/soft effect. Or maybe the Koivu pencil in https://gumroad.com/l/tuhis-brush-set-2020 or Edge Control in https://gumroad.com/l/JingsketchBrushes

Loish

hmmm.. maybe i should make a discord channel or something for a slightly higher tier? i might put up a post about this soon asking for people's opinions and figuring out what the best step would be.

Loish

YAY that is awesome! thanks so much for letting me know!

Loish

yay, glad you like it! you're not the first to say that, I will think of something so that we can share our art with each other.

Loish

haha they are my weakness too! but I have a tutorial on environment speedpaints on my cubebrush that you might like: https://cubebrush.co/loish?ref=loish

Loish

when I add the glowing effect, I always put it on a separate layer and then duplicate it and blur the second one. that second one, I always set to 'screen.'

Loish

haha yes the original iphone video is indeed 52GB. but the rendered version is just 3 GB, so it worked out in the end haha

Loish

hey anska! thanks for your kind words! I'm glad you like the mixture of learning content I create here :) I do usually work about 5000x6000 pixels, sometimes even bigger! I do believe i had that setting turned on, but I will double check it!

Aadishri Soni

Loish please make a video for Hair soon, i really need cause hair is something i rush to draw

Anonymous

Hey Loish! First of all thank you for this amazing tutorial. I'd like to tell you in case you don't know that if you want to merge down all your layers and save the backups at the same time, you can swipe down the screen with three fingers and select "copy all". After that you can paste it in a new layer. So that you wouldn't have to duplicate the page. It'll save time :)

Anonymous

great video.. thank you .. please keep posting videos on procreate.. it's always difficult to follow your steps when you draw on photoshop.. especially because you work a lot with the lasso tool and gradient

Anonymous

This is just great! It helps me in so many ways. First of all; this tutorial opens up Procreate so much more. I tend to keep using te same tools in the same way, over and over; This tutorial brings alot of fun in exploring Procreate. Als nice to read tips from other Patreons. Many tnx! My useful tip, is that you can change the image-output in ProCreate, when you share your IPADscreen with an audience. In stead of seeing all your zooming adjustments, you can also offer a steady image by changing the settings in preference > video > canvas. (i'm doing this from top of mind - not having my Ipad laying around) Greetings!

Anonymous

Thank you for posting these videos! I don't have the whole Procreate/iPad duo but maybe someday! They're very interested to see this perspective!

Anonymous

Ooo I like that idea! I would definitely be willing to join a higher tier for something like this.

Anonymous

Hi, this is awesome, thank you 🙏 It looks like you are just drawing on the iPad screen, or do you have a screen protector? I bought screen protectors....paper like effect, they were great but wore out fast. I don’t want to keep spending money or creating more plastic so I’m trying to adapt to no protector....so was curious what you use. Thanks 😊

Anonymous

Glad it helped. One of the most frequently asked questions on the official forums is why brush X has striped blending, and it’s almost always someone expecting a light glaze brush to act like a photoshop brush. Max seems to be setting up his more recent brush sets to kinda combat that, where most brushes have both a photoshop style blend and a more procreate style.

Anonymous

Yayyy! I just recently signed up and I'm so happy with these tutorials, thank you! So I saw another patron already commented about the blending modes that are set for each brush individually, but flow is a setting option in the procreate brush studio too. Another thing I noticed is that you don't use double tap (one tap with two fingers) to go back a brush stroke or triple (one tap with three fingers) to go forward a brush stroke? Maybe that'll help with your procreate painting flow. You can also change the settings, so that procreate won't let you paint with your fingers as long as the apple pencil is connected, so that would take care of the accidentally painting on the canvas situation :D I think the recolor option might have moved to the selection tool (Selection tool - Automatic - Paint Fill), but I'm not sure. I haven't really checked out procreate 5 yet :/ When I want to color lines I usually just set the sketch/lines layer to alpha lock and then paint over (or color fill) with a random color and then adjust it with hue/saturation. That might be easier than having to play around in Hue/Saturation to get it from gray to a color without the Recolor or Colorize tools. These were things I noticed and I thought they might help ☺️

Anonymous

Thank you sooooo much,,, You are literally one of the best artist/teacher/inspiration. Share all your knowledge and it’s amazing thank you thank you thank you!

Loish

thanks! I don't use a screen protector. I've been drawing on cintiqs for so long, I think i've really gotten used to drawing on a smooth glassy surface. I prefer it to the teture! i heard paperlike was great. sorry i can't help you more!

Loish

yep, it's a different workflow in many ways. I'll do more of these in the future!

Anonymous

Anyone else feeling uncomfy that Loish didnt use the double-tap-undo? xD It made me really itchy D: The tutorial was really great tho! I learnt alot from it and used the new information for my own art :)

Anonymous

I’m not sure if anyone has said anything yet, but I found out that dragging the left bottom corner of the reference box makes it larger or smaller! It’s still not all that small, but I found it got in the way a lot less

Anonymous

Everyone I know told me I needed the screen protector lol. I’m giving it a try without, 😊 I guess we make our own rules sometimes!

Loish

i'm not a huge fan of those kinda gestures! my brain isn't really wired for it. glad you liked it!

Sophie Meyer

Thanks for this! Been a huge Procreate fan for a while now...has completely banished photoshop from my workflow. So fun to see that you struggle with similar things like so many of us...like accidentally triggering gestures or drawing randomly on the canvas, or just playing around with the tools like a child and being excited by the effects :D

Anonymous

very helpful, thank you !

Brutal loish

Anonymous

thank you so much, Lois! Procreate is my only software so this was incredibly helpful. I learned a lot!

Loish

haha yep that's definitely the mode I get into when I use software other than photoshop! i've been using photoshop for over 15 years now so it's baked into my brain. procreate will always be 'new' for me. but it's a wonderful app, truly a game changer.

Anonymous

I cannot express how helpful this was! I got procreate and had no clue how to navigate and this honestly made my day!💕

Anonymous

THIS...was the video I was waiting for! Can you please please PLEASE do this for landscape art? This was a spectacular video, thank you so much! Can’t wait for the painting process video you said you were going to do. I am stoked!

Anonymous

This was incredibly helpful! Thank you for sharing!!

Anonymous

This was so, so helpful! Thanks so much for sharing!

Paulina Walachowska

This is very helpfull, thank you Lois so much !

Loish

I'm so glad you like it! many people have asked for an environment tutorial. i will add it to the poll for the next tutorial video!

Art With Joe

Thank you for this! I specifically asked for this and you delivered haha 😭🥰

Anonymous

Thank you for this tutorial!

Anonymous

Welp, there goes my money. I've been thinking about getting an iPad for Procreate. This tutorial is very helpful in showing the pro and the cons! <3

Anonymous

This is awesome! Loved watching your process!

Anonymous

Hi loish loved it thank you. Can you pls show us the finished pic

Anonymous

I really liked this video because I've been debating whether to spend the 16$ and get procreate on my iPad lol. I use Photoshop on iPad and I've gotten used to it but I'm curious if Procreate would be better. You showed a lot of great comparisons!

Loish

Procreate is quite nice as far as drawing on the ipad goes! i also feel like the best brushes are being made for procreate. but honestly i think almost all digital drawing software has the same potential, as long as there are layers, blending modes and different types of brushes.

Anonymous

I joind the patreon today, and watched this tutorial right away to see your basic work flow. I loved it very helpful and inspiring. You make it look so easy :) Thank you!

Anonymous

Finally watched this fantastic tutorial, can’t wait to try these tricks in my art tomorrow 😍😍😍😍

Anonymous

I could not find how to make it smaller 😳 I’ll try for sure!

Anonymous

I'm loving this tutorial! However I have a "problem", which is that, when modifying the color balance for the sketch lines, I cannot select "shadows" or "highlights". Instead, it stick to midtones, but the very dark lines are not changed. If I try to change the lines to a more grey color, then the more subtle ones are not changed when I adjust the color balance. Any idea of why this happens, or how it can be solved? Thanks a lot! :)

Loish

that's frustrating! so you're not seeing the option for shadows or highlights at all? have you tried updating your procreate software? another way to do it is lock transparency of the lines and then color over them with a brush. it might make the softer lines more intense but sometimes that works just fine. let me know if that worked for you!

Anonymous

Hi Loish! Great video I’ve rewatched multiple times now it’s really helpful. I was curious though, is there a canvas size and dpi you prefer on procreate?

Amycat

Not sure if anyone has said this yet but you can quickly change your eraser to your current brush by holding the eraser icon!

Loish

I usually go as big as I can without limiting the functionality too much. that's usually about 5000x6000 or something. always 300 dpi :)

Anonymous

You are a magician!

Romysketches

Wow, Loish - for you this might be a simple quick doodle and tutorial, but it really inspired me! I've been doing digital art for about a year now and I am so comfortable in my line-art but always wanted to go bit more towards the more 'free'/'painting' style, and this tutorial helped so much to create bit more oomphf! Thanks for sharing so much detail xxx a fellow Dutchy

Anonymous

Wow this is so amazing. I have learnt so much from just this video. Thank you!

Piotr Kostecki

Thank you for the tutorial! Love it!

Loish

thanks so much! i hope this will help with your future art, feeling free is essential for me to be able to enjoy drawing :)

Anonymous

Completely blown away by this tutorial, thanks a lot!!!!

Anonymous

Second time I’m watching this, really helped me to speed up my process and not getting so lost iin details! probably you already know but you can resize the reference window by dragging the corner :-) I recently saw a tutorial by Procreate xx

Loish

thanks for letting me know :) glad you liked the tutorial!

Anonymous

Wow, this is EXACTLY what I needed. I'm such a line artist so getting the loose free flowing painterly look has escaped me until now. Some things you did really clicked for me and suddenly it all felt very natural. Invaluable. Thanks so much for this!!!!

Loish

so glad you like it!! thanks so much for your kind comment :)

Anonymous

You made me do it! after 10 yrs i finally managed to grab a pen (in this case apple pen 😂)

Loish

haha I too resisted the urge to buy apple products for many years, but the ipad is just so good. so much better than any other mobile drawing tablet imo.

Anonymous

Omg, what a master class!. Thank you so much for your videos and art, so inspiring.

Cozy Cat (Andrea)

Not sure if this was mentioned, but the easiest way to change your line color from desaturated to saturated with color is to select curves - select red - and pull the left side of the graph up a bit and it'll turn your black lines to red. I hope this helps!

Anonymous

Thank you so much for this! I recently got an ipad and procreate as I decided to start mu digital art journey. I was so lost I didn't know what to do... This tutorial helped me SO MUCH!

Anonymous

Hi loish, great tutorial! Learning a lot from you about painting in Procreate. I’m used to staging my work like sketch, linework, then block colour, and finally detail, (have been doing it like that for years) but really trying to break away from that process. I’m just not enjoying the way it turns out anymore (it’s quite stiff looking) so learning from you how to paint and add movement is helping massively! May I ask what iPad Pro model you are using? I have one of the very first iPad Pro’s that came out back in 2017, but looking to upgrade and I’m not sure what one to get. Thank you so much! You are my first paid person to follow btw :)

Loish

thanks danielle, i'm glad you're enjoying it! i find going from sketch to color, and skipping lineart, keeps my work more dynamic so hopefully it will have the same effect on your art as well :) as for the ipad, i got it in 2018 so probably a similar model to yours! i hope this helps in some way and thank you so much for your support :)

Duendeartist

AWESOME tutorial! I’ve applied to a draw I did following your previous tutorials and it’s so amazing see how all tutorials combined slowly become something beautiful! I’m learning a lot with all your tutorials! Thank you so much!!

Lauri Panopoulos Lauridesign.com

Hi Lois, you can change the flow in the 'Brush Studio". Look for rendering, then scroll down for blending. You can also go to Apple pencil(in the brush studio) and under pressure you have the options of changing your size, opacity and flow with pressure. I'm not sure if you know this but: 1. before you enter the brush studio swipe left on the brush and it will duplicate it this way you can play with the settings and not worry about messing up the original settings. The other way to do it is go to the brush studio, go to "About this brush" and create a new reset point before you alter a brush. This way you can always go back and reset it. The native Procreate brushes are easy to reset not so much with the purchased ones unless the creator set a rest point. OK...this is a lot of info but hope it helps.

Anonymous

Hi Lois! Thank you so much for this tutorial, I've seen it lots of times. I'm writing now beacuse I just find out how to take off the lines that appear when you use the selection tool. You go to actions and then Pref, then un the last option you can adjust the selection mask visibility. Hope this helps, and thank you again ❤️

Anonymous

you can make the canvas smaller, you just have to drag it from the corner with one finger :)

Loish

thank you!! I'm glad I finally have that one figured out!

Anonymous

You might have found it already since I believe procreate has updated since this video, but recolor is still available! It was hidden in quick menu and can also be accessed when you drag and drop colors into the canvas. I use quick menu since it is easier for me to hold and swipe my gestures to access it.

Anonymous

This tutorial is incredible! I had a quick question - when you use the Gouache Clean brush, have you changed any of the settings? Is it the same as the one labeled "MaxU Gouache B" in your brushes? I feel like the stroke doesn't come up the same on mine, and it seems fuzzier, I suppose? Apologies, I'm not the most familiar with terms for the brushes and their details!

Anonymous

It also seems grainier, if that makes sense, and not as smooth!

Loish

hey emma! yes that brush is the same as gouache clean! I've noticed that moving the bottom slider upwards helps reduce fuzziness, does that help for you too?

Anonymous

I’ve been a fan of your work for years and I’m thrilled with this tutorial, thank you so much I feel so inspired!

Anonymous

Hey Loish, I just picked up an iPad Air 4 and downloaded procreate. This is the first time I have ever drawn on a monitor. I have to say it feels very alien to me. I was wondering if you adjusted the streamline settings on your brush, the one that helps you get a smoother line, or did you use the Razum brush right out of the box? My lines look nothing like yours. Just wondering . Chris

Loish

hey chris! it takes some getting used to, definitely give yourself time to figure it out! i usually have the streamline settings off completely. i've found that some brushes create more wobbly lines than others because of their texture or shape, so i stick to brushes that make my lines look smoother without the streamline :)

I don't know if someone mentioned this already but procrate has a option in the shortcut menu where you can enable to touch a certain point in your drawing (for example a hand splotsh that happened randomly somewhere) and it tells you which layer it is on! (For people who use lot's of layers this is a time saver!) I always disable the option after finding and ereasing because procrate confuses it sometimes with the colordropper tool. Thank you so much fir this tutorial loish! I hope procreate updates it's color change tools too. Im used to it now, but it's hard to follow tutorials from PSD when it's not the same.

Loish

that's an excellent tip! photoshop has that too and it's so useful sometimes to figure out which layer I should be on.

Anonymous

Doesn’t the palm rejection setting disable random marks caused by the hand touching the screen? 🤔 Haven’t used Procreate in a while. 😅

Loish

it does haha! my settings were wonky when I made this tutorial, sadly :(

Anonymous

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this before or if it's old news, but I recently found out that Procreate now supports Photoshop Brushes! I still use some of the awesome procreate brush sets but still mainly using my favorite Photoshop brushes since I found ouit about this.

Loish

yes I have heard of this! do they feel similar when painting on the ipad? I've heard that they can be quite different when translated into procreate!

Anonymous

Yeah I've heard that too! Maybe I was lucky, but my favorite brushes translated really well. I'd say it's 90% close but still a bit "Procreatified" because of the streamline setting etc.

Anonymous

Hello. thanks for the amazing content. second, is there any PICHEL native to procreate that you believe does things similar to that. your ice? I'm sorry if you already passed this information and I couldn't see it, it's just that my English is not so good and I'm Brazilian. thank you in advance

Loish

hey lara! thanks so much for the kind words! do you think you can formulate your question differently? I'm having trouble understanding it now, but I'm happy to help out and I'm sure I have some kind of advice or resources for you!

Anonymous

hey loish, how do i download this? thanks so much

Loish

hey! this one will be available in the feed whenever you need it (including for the basic tier after the structure change in october).

Anonymous

Hearing the excitement in your voice about the chromatic aberration effects applied with a brush made me smile and made me also really excited to play with it haha. Thanks for a lovely tutorial!

Phoenix

Do you have your own brush pack Loish? Can I have it? Thanks
