Week one of my #brushtober challenge is complete! Over the weekend I tested out gouache and acrylic, and I’m not gonna lie, it was rough. A part of me regrets taking on this challenge because I have such a long way to go in figuring out how to make this work for me! 😂 But then I remind myself that the reason I decided to do this is to expand my skills. Let’s hope I can figure this out before the end of the month!

To finish this experimental week, I made the first drawing with a mix of watercolor and gouache, testing how it would look if I worked from a rough sketch. The other images are of my initial gouache and acrylic test sketches. I uploaded the large version of the file so you can see the notes that I wrote! My main takeaway is that I watered down the acrylic way too much and need to buy some mediums to get more of a gloopy, creamy effect. So far I’m digging gouache the most, but maybe that will change if I use acrylic properly!

This week I’m doing slice of life sketches with ink wash & ecoline, wish me luck guys! As patrons, would you like to see some behind the scenes content for the brushtober stuff? If so, what would you like to see: step-by-steps, process videos, or anything else?

ooh I love the first painting! The colors are really beautiful together! I love seeing any part of your process :)

Whatever you feel up for with behind the scenes. I’m sure it’s a lot of work!

Lovely! And, btw, you can have both... Liquitex makes an acrylic gouache!

I'd love to see step by step and sketch to finished side by side comparisons. I feel like with traditional mediums I tend to overthink my initial sketch and then ruin it with the colors haha.

These are really lovely Lois! It's so neat to see you experiment and it looks like a new style is emerging. Different than your other work, but beautiful all the same!

Beautiful! Major kudos to you for pushing yourself outside your comfort zone! I struggle to really experiment with new mediums because I expect myself to be good at them straight away and get frustrated when that's not the case 😂 Your notes and experiments are so lovely and neat and I appreciate you sharing them with us!

I was disappointed at first that you weren't doing inktober, but this is super cool! You never fail to impress! ☺️

thanks! that's what i was surprised about with inktober in the past: that i found a way of handling it that felt like 'my style'. i hope i find it with these new media too.

me too please, would love to see your process in 'traditional' media :)
