Here it is: the third tutorial I’ve created exclusively for you patrons! This one is about head construction and expressions, and talks about the basic construction, different angles, squash & stretch, and scanning reference images for expressions. I hope you guys enjoy it!

Some stuff I refer to in the video:

• I talk a bit about some principles from my first tutorial on pose construction. If you haven’t seen that yet, watch it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-video-38377684

 • As always, stock reference from the lovely senshistock! https://senshistock.deviantart.com/art/The-Best-of-Harley-Mask-Pack-on-SenshiStock-com-645292924

 • I talk a bit about Jin Kim’s designs for Tangled. You can find the artbook, where I first saw these beautiful model sheets, here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811875555/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0811875555&linkCode=as2&tag=loish0d-20&linkId=608d632dd9843a4f02e04a64ac2ce408

If you have any questions, just post it below! Enjoy :)

Very helpful video! At 39:10 you talk about happy expressions and someone whistles in the background. That was very funny :D

Loish

hahaha i didn't even notice that! incredible that the timing actually supports the message.

Emma

I just barely joined and am making my way through all your tutorials. They are SOOO helpful! Thank you so much for all of these! Do you have one specifically for hair that I am missing?

Loish

I do, actually! You can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-hair-46112695

Hi Loish, another amazing tutorial :) Thank you so much (I've watched the one about colors last night and it's the first time that I hear this kind of intuitive approach, and it speak a lot to me, more than every other explanations about color rules)! Can't wait to try it on my futur characters. What is the brush you're using at 15:40 for the "sweeping lines" (I'm looking for that kind of brushes for my gesture drawings). Is it still the Macalabs sketch brushes that you previously was talking about?

Loish

woops sorry I didn't mention that! YES it is the macalabs sketch brush!

Anonymous

Thank you ! I'm fully convinced to buy it now 😊

Jcup

I've watched so many head tutorials but this one and it's simplicity really allowed me to grasp some really important concepts. Much. Appreciated!

Anonymous

Great thanks for putting the time in to do this. Very helpful breakdown 💜

Anonymous

New patron here, where do you get those fantastic brushes? :D

Anonymous

Thank you soooooooooooo much for this. I actually became a patron because I see your expression sheets \ character sheets all over Pinterest and I’ve always wanted to learn how you achieved them! Totally will implement these techniques in my art moving forward

Anonymous

Thank you so so much!

Loish

hey charles! you can get the macalabs brush here: http://cbr.sh/fg8up?ref=loish

Anonymous

Thanks Loish for the great toturial. I actually followed along and was impressed by what I was able to draw just by applying your advice. Thanks a lot!

Anonymous

thank you!!! this is old school stuff but very useful. Suffering badly from tutorial overloads and positive procrastination you simplified everything and just make it easier to follow in terms of just getting stuff done

Loish

happy to hear that julian! i always prefer to just explain how i do it, rather than bring in all sorts of complex terminology. i hope that helps make it more understanable in some way!

Anonymous

I can’t stop saying squash and stretch now 🤣 so fun!

Anonymous

I tried Loomis method, manga methods and i failed. The loish method solve my problem with the head angles. You are a incredible teacher. The horizontal line could be "vision line". Thanx you very very very much, Loish. P.D: the pose tutorial is 10/10 too

Niquey

I finally got the time to watch this video. So useful! Thanks for making it Lois!

Anonymous

that hair tutorial you mentioned should definitely come because I love the way you do it!

Anonymous

Simplifying and stylizing are very hard for me, and this video helped me make a significant brain shift. Thank you!

Anonymous

So impressed how your very first few lines already establish stylization and movement. I’m prone to trying to add that on later, but now see this should be there from the beginning. Great insights!

Anonymous

Your tutorials are so useful, I'm really happy that I've became one of your patreons :D Love all your work!

Loish

thank you! in my case, my art loses the movement the more detail I add, so that's why I try to maximize it as much as I can in the early stages :)

I have had a love hate relationship with digital art - I love it, it hates me. By following this tutorial I did the best piece I've ever done, which completely restored my faith in my abilities. So, thank you.

Loish

wow! I'm so happy to hear that stewart. digital art can be tough, it needs to 'click' in a way and getting there can be a long process. i'm glad this was helpful!

Anonymous

OMG I'm so glad I joined this Patreon, these tutorials are leveling me up so dramatically.
