Here is part 3 of the volcano painting process! It’s the final part. Part 1 can be found here, and part 2 can be found here. Again, it’s sped up 3x the real-time speed, and you can adjust the watching speed by clicking the gear button on the player. The total painting time was 12.5 hours.

Some more info about the process of this video:

ADDING TEXTURES

I wanted the smoke to have more of a realistic effect, so I added some textures from textures.com to the art. Basically I found some images of smoke and used layer modes to blend it in. It’s just a question of flipping through the layer modes and adjusting the levels/color of the texture until it seems to mix well with the painting. I then later painted over the texture to integrate it into the painting as a whole. I don’t use textures often but sometimes I feel like they can really elevate the finer details in a drawing, especially if it’s a larger landscape like this one!

FINISHING TOUCHES IN PROCREATE

When the painting was done, I still felt frustrated about the rocks that she was standing on. They just seemed to lack movement and the details were really distracting to the overall composition. I feel like textured brushes work a lot better in procreate, so I imported the PSD into procreate and painted over the rocks. I also used some of the textured brushes to add more detail to the levitating rocks above her hands. Most of the textured brushes I used for this came from the Brush Pack Pro II by RazumInc.

Allright, that’s it for the process of this piece! I hope you enjoy it and I hope you like the final drawing!

So beautiful 🙌🏾 but how do you know when your art is finished? Do you just say stop to your self or are there something you are going after ?

Loish

that's a tough one, i definitely feel tempted to over-render sometimes. honestly, one of the best ways for me to know when to stop is just to schedule how much time i want to spend on a painting - basically plan it in advance and try to stick to that. i get better results when i know that there's a time limit!

Okay thank you. Will you do a class on how to render properly ? Or can you recommend somewhere you can learn to render .

Loish

i will definitely do a video on rendering at some point! i've done a digital painting tutorial that covers this, amongst other topics: https://cubebrush.co/loish?product_id=ahu4ew
