Here is part 2 of the volcano painting process! Part 1 can be found here. Again, it’s sped up 3x the real-time speed, and you can adjust the watching speed by clicking the gear button on the player. The total painting time was 12.5 hours.

Some more info about the process of this video:

PAINTING ROCKS

Rendering rocks and chunky textures like this is so far outside of my comfort zone! This was what I struggled with the most during the painting process. So you’ll see me going back and forth a lot, adding some detail, then changing it, then painting over it again and again. I really tried to search for a way to paint these jagged rocks that was still consistent with my style.

MAKING GRADUAL CHANGES

I try to detail everything gradually, bit by bit. So I’ll focus on the foreground for a bit, then move to the background, and so on. Every time the detail level is elevated in one area, it changes the overall look and feel of the painting, which might mean that other areas need a different approach. In the case of this painting, I feel like the character pose and the rocks she is levitating need to be changed once the rocks in general are more detailed. This is a way for me to allow the painting to evolve organically: basically taking each phase as it comes, and only finalizing specific details like the pose when I have a better sense of what the overall image will look like!

Part 3 coming right up!
