After posting the rock and plant studies, I got a lot of questions about my process for them so I decided to put together a little step-by-step!

Using these steps really sped up my process for drawing things like this. Before I started using the lasso tool, drawing something like this was really cumbersome and took a lot of time because it’s hard to get all those details right with just a brush. By using the lasso tool, it’s just so much faster and easier. It’s not only a fast way to layer the colors but it’s also great for finer, sharper details. Somehow the shapes are just much more interesting. On top of that, I can use color modifying tools to quickly apply changes, which is a lot faster than choosing a color and then painting it on!

When drawing objects, the main thing that helps me is to scan over the reference image and try to figure out what the most important defining features are. If you want to work fast, then you can’t capture ALL of the details - so try to figure out which details define the object (light, curves, chunks, etc) and focus on those!

If you want to use this technique, think of it this way: you’re layering down the most important colors and details so that when you start painting, it’s just a matter of using the eyedropper and hacking away at it. You want to make sure most of the colors and details are there so that the painting at the end is easy and intuitive!

For more info about using the lasso tool, I put together a resource last month which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-36570445

Hope you guys find this useful!!

I would love to see a tutorial like this but on faces instead!

Tremendously useful because I can "translate" the concepts to more complex topics. Thank you!

i've done one in the past, based on some studies i did a few months back! here's the link: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-of-34294329

This is wonderful, thank you!

Thank you for these! 🤩 a question do you draw on the same layer?

Anonymous

Thank you so much ! Do you also use this technique on procreate ?

It is so interesting to see your style so b visible even on so different subjects than usually! It shows even mor clearly what accents you emphasise in your illustrations ( shape, movement, softness vs hardness contrasts). As a garden lover I also adore your plants sketches :)

This is super helpful; I’m just now building up my own stuff via Procreate and Instagram (@antcampart if you’d like to view) and your info shots and tutorials give me a ton of ideas. Thanks so much for sharing!

Very cool! I started using lasso because of your last post about it and it's a game changer indeed! Thank you so much for sharing that useful info! 👏🏻💕 Now I am sad that there is no real gradient tool in Procreate and I don't want to use it anymore haha 🙈

Loish

yeah it's sad right? but you can always use a soft brush and then blur it. it has more or less the same effect.

Loish

thanks so much! glad you like them! and happy to hear that you can see my style in them, i was concerned about that but now i'm feeling more encouraged to draw different things.

i haven't yet! on procreate i really just use the brushes. i do want to experiment a bit with translating this technique to procreate.

i keep the line and color layer separated until i've changed the line colors! then i merge them and work from one layer.
