#59 Loish: Mental Health for Artists in Times of Uncertainty

Listen to this episode from Basic Brainheart on Spotify. Loish (Lois Van Baarle) has always been interested in creating art, but the path forward hasn't always been clear or easy. Art school wasn't a p[particularly happy experience for her. Something many fans of hers may not know is that she is also an incredibly knowledge mental health advocate.

Just wanted to say thank you to you and Hannah for making this amazing podcast! It was wonderful to be able to laugh along with you both and hear what you had to say about surviving this time! I actually find your videos where your talking really relaxing to listen to when I have anxiety! It was really fascinating to hear you discuss how the Netherlands has reacted to the pandemic and how both of your daily lives has had to change! Hope you are keeping well! I would also love to see someone create an orc Princess! Might have to give that a shot... Thank you both again I found this really helpful in a difficult time :3

Thank you for sharing this! As you were saying, it does really calm down my anxieties to listen to other people talk about theirs and hear that they're feeling the same things as me but expressing those emotions in a different way. It also warmed my heart to hear you enjoyed living in Virginia so much! I live in Richmond, VA now and have lived in Virginia my whole life and it's really a nice place to be settled. :) Hope every day is getting a little bit easier for you!

Loish

thanks rachel! i was actually going to be visiting a friend in richmond last month, but it all got cancelled with the coronavirus stuff. hopefully we'll be going next year!

Loish

glad you liked it :) i was watching the second LOTR movie after this podcast recording, still no female orcs. i guess it's because they're created from mud bubbles or something?? haha

Just did a bit of digging, seems to be there are female orcs! Not that they are mentioned per say! But more eluded to in the books!

gosh this was such a great talk. I felt so comfortable listening to you both. It was a friendly, intimate, heart warming conversation that I really needed right now hahaha And I really liked where you said about talking with other people, opening up and being real in conversations. I always jitter when I try to talk with artists I admire cuz its like a sudden spotlight from someone I look up to. I feel like I dont want to fuck up the conversation, or I cant be myself.... So I always ended up being fake unintentionally. Only from last year to now I started trying to see beyond that fear and actually connect with that person. I wont lie, I still feel butterflies every time, but now I feel the human connection a lot more. And its sooooo good. The art reflects a lot of the artist and its such a richer conversation to get to know the person. btw I would def get butterflies if I ever met you in person Loish :'D Cheers and thanks for the great content!

Loish

thanks for the kind words!! it's ok to freeze up when you meet people you look up to. you can't expect to be able to squeeze in everything that you feel for someone in a short moment. i have also awkwardly gushed many times at big events, meeting my heroes. don't be too hard on yourself :)

Hey! Is this podcast found anywhere other than Spotify? Where I live, Spotify doesn’t work so I don’t have access to this :/

Hi Loish, I was just looking through your older content, because I never took the time to go way back, but I notice this URL isn't working anymore and I can't find your podcast on the internet either. Has it been deleted? I was just curious about this podcast, since mentally we're still in the same situation ;)

Loish

hey julia! you're right, looks like it was taken down! that's a bummer, I just reached out to Hannah to ask if she's ok with me uploading it here. I'll keep you posted!

Loish

hey julia, it's back up! so you can listen to it now :)
