I did some expression sketches a while back which you might have seen on my socials! Here’s a little video that shows my sketching process. I kinda struggled with making this video and there were some focus issues, plus the phone bounced around a lot while I was filming, so I hope to make another sketching video soon that is better production-wise. But for now, I hope you enjoy this one!

Here’s the final result:

In the first part of the video,  you can see how I construct a face: I use a simple circle & curved line construction to establish the angle and then start lightly drawing the features on top. Then I’ll gradually work in more detail, refining certain lines and emphasizing certain shapes and areas to clean up the sketch (which you see me doing more in the second part). I always aim to have a sketch which is a nice mix of loose construction lines and more defined, structured lines. Having variation in line weight (basically some thinner lines and some thicker) is a priority for me when making sketches.

I hope this video gives some insights into my sketching process! Let me know if you have any questions or things you’d specifically like to see in a future sketch video!

These are extremely helpful! It helps me understand how line weight works, thank you so much! And may I know what pencil+leads you’re using here?

Loish

it's a generic mechanical pencil from BIC I think, I'm guessing HB?

I love these so much, and the process is so informative! ❤️

OMG thank you so much for uploading this!! One of the things I'm most curious about your process is how you sketch and plan anatomy! This is truly a gift!! T_T

Oh awesome! I was just thinking I wish you would post a video of you drawing in real time. Thank you!!

This sort of "how I work" video is what I learn from. This one is really useful. Perhaps you could do some short chunks of your work on a major creation and showing at normal speed how you do things like building color layers. These "mini" lessons could even be built using a simple subject like a sphere or cylinder. Not as much fun to watch, but very instructive. I'm very glad to be supporting you and your work. Thanks for keeping up in these crummy times!

Loish

thank you for continuing to support me in these crummy times! i will definitely think about putting together something like that for you guys!

I love these sketching vids too. I like your sketching style as well as your painting style. But I get lost in certain parts of anatomy, so I definitely appreciate the real time sketches. I would love to see some more instructional vids on face construction. Maybe a short vid on eyes, one on noses, etc. If you’ve already done this then I’d love more info on where to find it. Thanks!

Love this! You know, seeing you erase and redo so much makes me feel better about my drawing process. It takes so many goes to get what I'm going for. Haha! Thanks for sharing!

Loish

haha i erase all the time! or undo, when working digitally. otherwise it's just too mentally draining for me.

Loish

will definitely consider putting something like that together next time i film my sketching process!

what lead do you use, i can get very dark in my sketches

I was told by a very good art teacher once that if your darks are not getting dark enough then your shading in your light areas too dark. Keep all your values very light and at the very end hit your dark areas last.

is there any audio to these videos or are you just watching long videos I just can't hear anything?

Loish

hey chantelle! there's no audio on the process videos. only on the tutorials, Q&A's and talkthroughs!
