It’s been so long since I made some gesture / anatomy studies! I dove back into the deviantart stock photo section and sketched these. I want to do more studies from reference and push myself to stylize and exaggerate more, so expect more of that in the coming months! I’ll post larger versions, step-by-steps and the reference pictures tomorrow.

That one on the back is really strong, and the feet of the legging-lady, superbe!

How did you learn this color harmony?

Niquey

Your colors are so good! I wish I had an eye like that. These are very cool. I tried looking for stock images on Deviantart the other day and I couldn't find any! What categories do you choose? I'm at a loss....

Loish

usually through stock images > model! with the new deviantart system (eclipse), the category disappeared.. so i have to switch it back to the old site to make it work haha. beware of porn-ish nudity though.

Loish

it's mostly based on the technique of changing the color of the lines and working from a monochrmatic color scheme! i think the step-by-steps I'm posting will reveal more insights into this.

Senshistock is my personal fave for DeviantArt stock photos. There are so many varieties with many different body types :)

Hey, Loish, are there any exercises you recommend to improve gesture and figure drawing? I usually find a picture to draw but I feel more like I’m copying the measurements and replicating it rather than getting better at drawing it and being able to create from imagination. On these here did you focus more on shape or rhythm, or negative space etc?

I am drawn by the girl at the top. I honestly am blown away how much color you choose to add into everything. I'm so boring and just go with regular skin color and shades of that color every time I draw people. I need to break away from that.

I have this same problem too, when I draw from the reference I can draw reasonable anatomy, but when I try to pull a pose out of my head I’m at a constant loss

sometimes i stick to the colors i see, but sometimes i like to play with other colors too :) just to make it more playful!

hm, what helps me is to downsize the reference! I look at the ref image at a tiny size, like thumbnail size, so I get a better sense of the overall shapes. and I try to keep my intial sketches loose, so that there's more room for stylizing!

Oo thanks so much! The step by step process you posted was also so helpful! :)

I think these sketches are awesome! I like the shapes, colors and dynamic!
