Hey everyone and welcome to a very important survey that will help shape our remake of Vanilla Factions Expanded - Insectoid.

I come to you with a very critical question, and since you play this game quite a lot, you should be able to advise me on the correct direction.

Vanilla Factions Expanded - Insectoid 2 will feature unique genelines of insectoids that you will be facing. They will appear alongside the standard insectoids (megascarabs, spelopedes, megaspiders and megapedes), but will never mix with other genelines.

These genelines have unique characteristics that will make facing them extremely difficult. You will have to adapt your strategies to whatever enemy you're facing. I won't go into too much detail just yet, but I will explain the basics:

  • Acid geneline - They mostly spit acid at you, over short and medium range, dealing devastating damage.
  • Jumper geneline - Insectoids of this geneline have wings and can fly short and long distance to immediately engage you in melee. They are formidable melee fighters.
  • Fire geneline - These insects either spit chemfuel at you, creating huge flammable filth splotches, or outright explode when killed, setting the previously drenched in chemfuel terrain on fire.
  • Rock geneline - These insects have incredibly thick carapace that makes them very, very slow, but it also makes their armor nigh-impenetrable. Focused fire on individual insects of this gene will gradually decrease their armor - meaning the more damaged they are, the quicker they will be to damage further.

I have ensured that you can easily tell which geneline is which, but now I have a choice when it comes to deciding what general color their carapace should be. I have prepared two mock-ups:

  • Neutral colors - This means that all insectoids share colors with similar standard insectoids of the same class. Megascarab-sized insectoids all have the same color as megascarabs, megapede-sized insectoids have the same color as megapedes, bosses have the same color as other bosses etc.

  • Geneline colors - This means that each insectoid type has a unique hue and shade based on what geneline it belongs to, which could potentially help differentiate them in combat.

Let me know which one you think works better, and which one you'd like to ultimately see in your game!

I'm concerned about the 'Fire geneline' being out of place/concept. Fire is the vanilla weakness for insects and Mechanoids have hig resistance or immunity, so it makes little sense that engineering or evolution takes a full geneline in that direction. It would make more sense to have an electric/emp geneline.

The reasons you give for a neutral colour scheme is very valuable and outweights the potential color-blindness issues that the geneline colour scheme has.

What if the stalker gene line, instead of red, was more of a pale white?
