Hello you beautiful people. I come to you with a brand new typical tuesday suggestions thread in which you get to tell me exactly and specifically what you're looking for from one of our upcoming projects.

I have previously mentioned that we are planning to remake Vanilla Factions Expanded - Insectoids.


The way I see that mod right now, is that it's this ugly child of VE that never really got the attention it deserves simply because it was born before we truly mastered the art of making mods. I think a lot of the mechanics and elements in VFE-Insectoids simply don't fit, or don't work the way they should, or simply aren't engaging enough.

Now, I have some plans and notions already written down when it comes to what I want from VFE-Insectoids 2, but I will keep those to myself just yet until they are actually designed on paper.

I can share however what I'm definitely planning to remove from Vanilla Factions Expanded - Insectoids:

  • Armillarix moved to Vanilla Plants Expanded - Mushrooms
  • Archotech artifacts will be moved to Vanilla Archotech Expanded
  • Riot gear will be moved to Vanilla Armor Expanded, including Riot shield
  • Vat-grown insectoids, Insectoid growing vat and the three genomes will be moved to Genetics Expanded.

Now, the real question is: What would you like to see in the remake of Vanilla Factions Expanded - Insectoids? Leave a comment down below and I will go through all of them in a few days to see what I think would work. This is your chance to have your dream mechanics and content make it in to one of our mods!

I think the obvious option is to add an insect version of the mechanator and an insect version of the total war mechanic from VFE Mechanoid, personally I'd like to see insectoids work like Mechanoid Clusters, except steadily build them up over time rather than spawning fully built, rather than buildings they gestate specialised insects, like ones with mortars or psychic drones. From there I think it would be interesting to build one the "pheromone manipulation" angle and allow you build structures that can manipulate a local Hive to be docile and produce resources and abilities you can use.

It was mentioned, but I'd like to second an insectoid mechanator. I don't have any ideas on how to differentiate it, but a colonist becoming a "queen" sounds very inline with the mod

The single coolest thing an insectoid mod could add would be improved hive-building, instead of them just hollowing out a big circle, making a bug nest produce something they can build walls with would be sick. I imagine modding is a bit more complex than this, but just a few blueprint structures like "nest" "food storage" and like two hallway variants would go a long ways towards making infestations more interesting

Just like coding for a caterpillar to become a butterfly, I think it would be okay for mega spiders or other entities to evolve into other entities when they are spawned and survive for a long period of time.
