It was so much fun to see you become so invested Lexi, in the UK most people “inherit” a team in childhood and for the majority of fans they go there whole life with nothing but heart ache and disappointment, it’s so special because regardless whether they win or lose, the highs and the lows of victory and defeat are all experienced collectively, as a community. Its such a special concept that brings people together in triumph and disaster and makes imposters of both. Internationally the top premier league teams have global superstars who are paid 10s of millions of dollars a year The English football system is so special because the team you inherit is likely not to be one of these few Premiership super teams like Man City but a side whose prestige has been on the decline for decades, where heartache and disappointment have become normal for its small following of loyal and dedicated fans, however Cinderella stories do happen where the stars align and a teams fortunes change and they go on a rollercoaster rise to prominence. Ordinary players do the impossible, David beats Goliath and the result can be of such significance that they rejuvenate local economies and unite whole communities. People have there ashes scattered at the local football stadiums, donate their life savings in wills to community trusts, fans travel hundreds of miles on a windswept Tuesday nights to watch there teams lose 4-0 only to do it all again the week after. They say it’s the “Hope that kills you” and there correct as disappointment and defeat for most are the constant but it’s faith in things will get better and that your teams fortunes can change that keep people invested, attached and engaged. Look at what’s happening at Wrexham FC with Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney, two huge Hollywood Stars who have become so invested in a small Welsh Club that they make flights across the Atlantic every week to watch there side grind out a result against a none descript side from a unremarkable place they have never heard of. The English Football League operates on a pyramid system of “leagues” with around 20 teams in each league. At the end of a season the top 3 teams get promoted to the next tier on the pyramid wile the bottom three get relegated to the tier below. There is also annual cup competitions where all teams from all leagues compete and 11 normal guys with 9 to 5 jobs such as bricklayers, call handlers and binmen can win their way to playing against sides like Man City or Tottenham Hotspur Infront of 70,000 fans and broadcaster to television screens around the world, and yes sometimes through sheer determination and heart can even go on to do the impossible.
