The Island- Thank you so much for such a fun movie reaction, Jessie! This was actually a movie on my list of movies that I hoped to one day request from you too. I'm happy someone was able to do so for you. I really enjoy this movie. Although, not for the reasons most people might enjoy a Michael Bay movie for, given that he's known for creating these crazy, overdramatic, long, and drawn out actions sequences in all of his movies. I'm not a fan of the Transformers movies that he is probably known best for, or Michael Bay in general. However, he has made a few other really good movies that I enjoy outside of The Island. Movies such as The Rock with Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery, Pearl Harbor with Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck, as well as the first two Bad Boys movies, which are fun thanks mostly to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Not so much the third movie in the franchise. I hated the third Bad Boys movie. These other movies are also at times overdramatic, and the action can be a bit much. However, I still enjoy them. Just like I enjoy The Island too. And all because I love the overarching story behind all the action. The story about two clones discovering a horrifying truth about themselves being clones, while vile people are using them and so many more for their body parts just so that the original people they're copies of, can harvest them for whatever they want and/or need to live far longer than they're meant to. I just really love this movie's overall story arc and the messages throughout this film. That no one is less than human. That people, no matter who they are, aren't just products or playthings to be used by anyone else. I enjoy some of the action and this movie's excitement. And I love the thrills. But I mostly just love the story behind it all. And along with the story, I really love each of the major characters throughout this movie. Including Sean Bean's character who has a God complex. Ewan McGregor as Lincoln Six Echo, and as Tom Lincoln, is phenomenal as always! I have always loved him as an actor ever since I first saw him play a young Obi Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels. And I have loved him in many, many movies since. Including some of his movies from before the Star Wars prequels. As for Lincoln Six Echo... I love his curiosity, his innocence, and his strong drive to survive upon discovering the horrifying truth about himself and everyone he cares about, being clones grown and later killed off simply for the survival of their sponsors. Scarlett Johansson plays Jordan Two Delta, or Sarah Jordan, and she comes to be saved by Lincoln upon his discovery of the truth, and together they escape their world below ground and fight for survival. Like with Lincoln, I love her innocence as well. And yet we also see her own strength and fight that we've seen in many of Scarlett's characters. Especially as Natasha Romanoff in The Avengers movies. And then... I've also grown to really love the character of the mercenary... Albert Laurent, played by Djimon Hounsou. An actor you probably recognize from Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, as one of Ronan's thugs. But back to Djimon's character, Laurent in The Island... I absolutely love the moment we see Laurent observing Jordan as she is rubbing her branding after he captures her, as we get the sense that this man has absolutely come to see his mistake in taking Merrick's word that these clones are less than human. We do get hints of him feeling differently about what he's doing there for Sean Bean's character, Merrick. But they're more subtle, which I also quite love too. And then... We soon learn exactly why we come to see Laurent grow a conscience, when he shares his story with Merrick about how he too was once made to believe he was less than human. And I just love that Laurent comes to help Lincoln and Sarah save their friends and all of the rest of the clones from being killed. And as for Dr. Bernard Merrick played by Sean Bean... I hate this man so much, just as anyone who watches and enjoys this movie is meant to hate him. And yet I really love the concept of this character, who absolutely has a God complex. He's a fantastic villain. And Sean Bean, whom I have seen in many other movies as well, plays him brilliantly. I also love Lincoln's friend, James McCord, played by Steve Buscemi. I love the humor he brings to this movie, and I love how McCord quickly becomes willing to help Lincoln and Jordan to escape because he and Lincoln are friends. However, I hate that he is soon killed by Laurent's men for trying to help his friends. It is very sad, because he was a good man who tried to do the right thing. This story brings together Lincoln and Jordan, both of whom are clones that were made for harvesting so that their rich counterparts could selfishly extend their lives for far longer than we as humans are ever meant to live for. And what's more intriguing... I love how both of them soon find themselves in a fight for survival, when Lincoln discovers the cruel truth behind the men who runs the facility and who lied to them about them being survivors of a deadly contamination that destroyed the world outside from where they lived. What a fantastic overarching story! However, like you... I really wish there was less drawn out action sequences, far less product placements, and I really wish we could have seen what comes of the clones in the end upon them being saved and freed. Instead of the movie just ending with a flash shot of Lincoln and Jordan running away on their new boat. Maybe the clones all run off to live together on a real island somewhere, along with Lincoln and Jordan. I like to imagine this is so. And it would make far more sense than having them all just try to intergrade themselves into the world. And then... I love all of the scenes with Lincoln coming face to face with his doppelganger when they come together, as Lincoln seeks him out to get help, only for the real Lincoln to betray them, causing Lincoln Six Echo to have to fight him until he is able to deceptively take the original out through Laurent. Fantastic! I love that Laurent eventually comes to want to help Lincoln and Jordan to fight against the company that is led by Dr. Bernard Merrick. And I love the story behind his turn, as he chooses to help the clones because he knows how it feels to have been branded and forced to believe he was worth nothing. This movie was such a surprise when I first watched it, because I had no idea what to expect other than perhaps a lot of action, and not as much of an in depth storyline. Because I feel that Michael Bay isn't really known well for in depth movies, Because he definitely prefers over the top, non stop action. The Island gets a lot of action that is a bit too much for me too. However, it also has an over arcing story that I really love and enjoy. And I appreciate this very much. Thank you again so much for reacting to this movie, Jessie! I love Ewan McGregor very much, and his overall role in this movie was phenomenal! As is Scarlett Johansson's role too! I always love your many movie reactions, dear friend. And I can't wait for many more like always!! Sincerely, Heidi
