Was very much looking forward to this one. Andrew Lincoln and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are phenomonal actors. Is it any surprise people started seeing this as the Negan Show at some point? I've seen quite a few people that didn't like this period of the show say they only kept on watching for Negan. I don't know about the final scene at Hilltop either. This was the final season with Scott Gimple in charge, my guess is that he left it muddled and ambigious so the next and final showrunner, Angela Kang, will be able to do whatever she wants with it. I believe the actor for Jesus, out of the show, said that the character was playing along and didn't want any part of it, but that wasn't portrayed in the scene at all. Ah well. It's just cliffhanger weirdness I suppose. Not the first time. The 1930s and 40s can attest to the time that the movie serials would have crazy cliffhangers, only for the next chapter to ignore them like nothing happened. That's where the term came from after all :P The Saviors being a continued threat is a interesting point you bring up. But remember that there's ordinary innocent people living there! Sadly I think that was a point the show bungled too far. In the comics they are not as cartoonishly evil, and so their "integration" into the communites was more smooth. I suppose they wanted them to be a bigger threat in the show, but I do miss the "red-headed stepchildren" that the Saviors were in the comics. Unfortunately, this is Morgan's final appearance in this show. He "transfers", if you will, into the spin-off show Fear the Walking Dead and his story continues there, from Season 4 to the current final Season 8. The mysterious Helicopter from this season (and if you remember, the cans Jadis had in the scrapheap, had the same interlocking rings symbol as the Heli, hmmm) and who it belongs to gets more play in that show. They do a little Marvel fiddling with interconnectivity, so don't expect any answers for those guys for the remainder of this show. It's all been building up in multiple shows for years, a lá Thanos. It still hasn't even been resolved yet! Dwight also vanishes from this show ;_; Unfortunately during this season's filming a stuntman died during a scene with Austin Amelio, the actor for Dwight, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was a reason for why he left. Dwight in the comics had an interesting story arc from the comics that Austin wouldn't be able to portray. A shame. In the comics Dwight, while being an officer for Negan, was more active and less pawn-y. On the other hand, he was also more confidant in his rebellion against Negan, and didn't need any external events to inspire him to approach Rick. In fact, in the comics, he was already working with Ezekiel and the Kingdom. As he grows in stature and leads the Savior's in the comics, he also gains a more proactive outlook thanks to his experience with Negan, and this eventually leads into a burgeoning conflict with Rick, and Rick's preference for diplomacy with external threats, threats that remind Dwight of Negan. Like I said, would've been cool to see the show develop more of, but if it's true that Austin left due to that tragedy, I respect that decision. Mental health matters much more than this nerd's clamouring for fake things in a show.
