The deal with the man that Sawyer killed was that he was just a guy that owed Hibbs money (the dude who talked to Sawyer in the start). Had him do some dirty work for him by making it seem like it was the Sawyer he was looking for.

Hibbs used sawyer as a hitman. He lied. Sawyer killed the wrong man.

I misunderstood the result of the plot towards the end a bit after first watch as well. I thought Sawyer had asked "You owed money from HIM?", not Hibbs. Couldn't tell who the writers were referring too and why. With all the "grifter" con artist talk and slang at the beginning the plot was a little LOST on me at the time since I was only 21 when I first watched it. After I watched a second time with subtitles on I understood what had happened.
