Maybe you've seen them on some wall paintings of ancient baths, pulling the chariot of Aphrodite.

Exactly, Greeks were into mixing hooves with fins, and if Poseidon and all the other Men of the Sea settled with sea horses, this sassy goddess wanted half men, one-fourth fishes, the last fourth horses, to carry her around the seas.

I guess she loved to stare at wet muscular backs while riding. Can we blame her for that?

From an artistic viewpoint, for me, that's a perfectioned version of the Hippocampi. Human faces are a lot more manageable than the long muzzles of horses, I got more comfortable with greenish palettes and also horse genitals.

I love to imagine that a very firm harness is a sort of status symbol between them, and those creatures love to showoff their resistance to such constraints. Implementing them in my story would be very difficult both from a technical and "moral" point of view (is it borderline feral?) but I'm up to challenges.
