In Warhammer Fantasy RPG, all of these weapons (except the flail) are listed under one entry, "Hand weapons". Swords, axes, hammers, maces, clubs, all with the exact same statline to represent basic one-handed weapons without any other notable properties.

Outgrowth from the tabletop wargame version of Fantasy it sounds like, where the definitions are basically weapon, big weapon, long weapon, weapon with shield. Add magic for seasoning or specials.

It does matter. When you're choosing between two different objects that do the same thing, it makes you think about why you're picking one over the other. At least, it should.
