Not a whole lot to say about this one. I wrote this in 1992, when I was in grad school. At the time I was vigorously trying to get a short story published. I only succeeded with one, and this isn't it.
A disproportionate amount of what I wrote back then featured mages in training in some way. Harry Potter hadn't come along yet, so maybe JK Rowling and I were tapping into the same zeitgeist? Only she wrote a series of books and became a billionnaire, and I did not.
Inspirations that went into this include the obvious homage to Labyrinth and David Bowie as Jareth, but also my obsession at the time with the dual-sexed character Berg Katse from the anime series Gatchaman.
