Making of a picture 4 (Patreon)

Here we are with a new Art Talk post! Let’s continue working on Violet Evergarden picture :)

Looks like this time we’ll do quite a big step into the picture, so it’s almost done! After applying the flat colors, here comes the shades :D Shades seems to be a small part after sketching, inking, adding flat colors and so on, yet they require to understand a bit of color theory to work well.

What matters when applying shades and “painting” your picture, is to understand a bit the concept of light and how it affects shadows. If we decide a light source in a picture (where the light comes from), all shades should be consistent with that. One thing I found very very useful is to study (as in, looks carefully XD ) anime and cartoon shading style, like checking many screencaps from your favorite anime and looking how color was used there :) In our case, Violet style is more detailed than many other animes, so it was very fun to paint those, trying to recreate the original style. I hope you like the picture so far!
