When we started working on FET we chose a resolution of 1000 x 720 Even back then that was very limited. However, we were planning for four books and had no real idea how big that would make the game so we were very conservative when picking a resolution. When drawing I try not to draw too small because very little of it remains when I have to resize the original files to 1000x720.

If you play FET in a window, and render at it's native resolution, it's images are generally sharp but very small. I usual play in a slightly enlarged window. But this makes the graphics slightly blurry. Full screen is very blurry.

I always figured I couldn't do anything about this "past sin" and we were stuck with it. However, I've come up with a trick yesterday to use larger resolution characters within our limited native resolution of 1000 x 720. This means the blurriness would be gone even if you go full screen and use 1920×1080 pixels.

This is something I'd have to add manually for each scene and is not a quick fix. Old scenes would still be blurry, but I can start using my "hack" for scenes you haven't seen yet. And perhaps if I ever have the time, older scenes as well.

It would make scenes slightly more difficult for me to create and take me a bit more time. And the file sizes would grow. I estimate a scene worth about 2 Mb in data would become twice that amount. also it will still show big fat black bars on the side of the screen if you go full screen(that's here to stay no matter what).

Besides that... there might be something I'm missing right now which could become a problem. But still... there's quite a striking difference if you play the game in full screen. In windowed mode it would look the same as it is now.

Here's a quick example of a full screen depiction. Left Opal is using my new thingamajiggum and the right Opal is how she' d look without my "trick" at full screen. You might have to look at it yourself on full screen to see the difference. I'll add it in the attachments, maybe that way it'll be easier to see, but you can right mouse click on the pic below, choose view image and click once again to enlarge it.

Despite the disadvantages, I'm leaning towards starting to convert the unseen scenes into their higher res equivalents, but I'm still not entirely certain so I'd like some feedback from you guys to help me decide. I'm adding a poll below. Of course if you have something to say which the poll doesn't cover, go right for it.

I honestly cannot tell the difference

I play in full screen on a 1080p laptop and honestly I haven't noticed it :)

Anonymous

Always played original in window. No problems.

Avatargowoosh

The difference is honestly minimal unless you're playing on a fuckin gigantor flat screen TV 😂 I say fuck it, keep it the way it is. Looks just fine to me. The story, dialogue and the scenes themselves matter more to me than a little resolution bump. If you want to, by all means go ahead. But for me, I say don't waste your time and burden yourselves more.

Anonymous

I usually play the game fullscreen and am in no rush to get the game. Your "thingamajiggum" looks great and really like it! What stands out to me the most is the higher definition in the character's face.

Anonymous

Honestly I don't see a HUGE difference and I'd rather further the actual game instead of focusing on "fixing" small graphical issues

Tyler

I think that you should do whatever you want, however. I dont think it's worth it to go back and change all of the old scenes at least until you call this game completed.

John Haar

I play on my android so it dosent matter at all

Anonymous

Look up a program called yandere2x I use it to make videos into 4k so far I've made this list of anime into 4k using it and it's genuinely amazing and would work wonderfully on your art tinyurl.com/tacticalkyuubi1

Anonymous

Are you upscaling the images 2x using topaz or waifu and then scaling them back down to 1x?

Anonymous

I’ve been playing in full screen and it seems fine but I’m always for higher resolution if possible. Lets talk more when you can convert to VR, lol 🤪

Sean

Personally, my crappy Mac struggles playing FET sometimes. If the trick is going to mean more for the computer to process, I'd rather keep it as is. I can't go fullscreen anyway unless I want to really hear that VVRRRRMMM coming from the fans. That said, I do notice the blurriness if i go fullscreen, so that would definitely be a visual improvement. It's your choice, MITY.

Jdogzero Silverblade

bitch you can make this game 2 GB and ill still use it XD, size isnt an issue for me at all. might be for others but i think almost everyone on the planet that owns a computer can handle 2MB XD. thats tiny for a game.

Ragnarok

I have been around since book one but now I have 4k monitors. The game is really quite small now and it makes it quite a bit more difficult to enjoy. This would be a game changer for many! Please do, and I also think it'll eventually be worth it to go back and do the old scenes, perhaps as some change of pace/follow on work after this book is finished!

Dubsington

I can't see any difference between the two images, so I'd prefer you spent the time on new content. Going back and improving resolution would be a great feature for a 1.1 release after all the content is out.

Anonymous

Agreed. I wouldn't mind it being improved now, but it does feel like something once it's finished.

Bill Kurtis

Would this not only effect the download time, but also the boot time for the game? Personally, I've never noticed any sizing issues. I'm fine with either, but man my internet is already pretty slow.

BJakin

I'm currently using a cell phone and the image on the left when zoomed in looks clearer and less "pixelated". So I say go with the new way.

Revalusion .

If your delay from Cbob becomes real and you need to slow development to make sure they have a healthy work/life balance then i say yeah, refinish the images. otherwise this seems like a luxury at best. The reprocessed image does look really good though.

GameFREAK

I'm not the type of person to ask this type of thing about a game is still a game right from personal opinion it doesnt matter how the game looks in my perspective it all depends on how much work is put into it.

Anonymous

I can tell the difference with the blur on the right, but im using Android so I dont think it'll personally matter to me in the long run

Skidles

Definantly can see the difference. but truthfully I never thought of it being a problem (for me) so i'm cool with whatever u decide to do :)

Anonymous

I always play fullscreen, and only notice the blur because you tell me there's a difference :D I see a little difference in the image comparison, but not a whole lot (sry to say) I don't have any problem what so ever playing the game full screen as it is. If you really feel like doing alot of work then go for it :D bigger files doesn't scare me away from this great adventure :D

Anonymous

Like I a lot of people have said I really don’t see any difference, but even then the game is already great as it is and so I don’t mind ANYTHING about what the game looks like right now. Do as you wish but I say nay.

Apex

I've always played in fullscreen, however I don't really have a preference for what resolution the game is in. I mean, I play on a 72" TV lol

Anonymous

Has never been a problem for me it’s an amazing game as it is

Anonymous

I always thought that slight blur was on purpose to make it look more like the original show.. >.> Never tried it NOT in fullscreen.

Peter Vanusanik

where is the option to redraw everything to 1080? Jk.... unless

Nathan Green

I honestly didn't notice but i played the whole thing full screen and if blur means no black bars then I'm all for it

Nörther

I say finish the game as it is and the give it the as part of the final spit shine the fans ( me included ) have demanded. I personally also play on full screen laptop anf have not seen the blurrines. Then again you are the artist and I am the critic, therefore tell me to go fuck myself and do what you want

John wayne

I have played on full screen for 3 years now and never noticed the bluriness, the example makes it pretty clear, however I don't think this should be a crucial thing that has to be done short-term. Maybe work on this when you don't have anything to but don't feel like this is necessary. That's my opinion at least and just a suggestion, do as you please.

Carpe Brewem

I play on a phone so blurriness isn't an issue. I voted no change since the have already takes so long to load. Just my 2 cents.

Deonast

I play full screen on an ultrawide 32" so I'm used to black bars which I know this doesn't address but you get used to it, same as I'm used to the slight blur. That said I like the sharpness in the example so yes if you can do it going forward and as someone mentioned when there are waits for code maybe update older scenes. I'm not running a toaster, if it doesn't impact performance? then it is only a higher download for other users.

Deonast

Shame there isn't a way to automate two builds, lower res smaller download for Android users, higher for decent computers and good bandwidth, but I fear that would greatly increase workload if it were a manual process

Kronos992

I play in 2560 x 1080 though...

Anonymous

I honestly never noticed any blurriness despite playing fullscreen on a decently large 1440p monitor, but that comparison image shows a real noticeable difference. I would much prefer the higher clarity on new and older scenes but wouldn't complain if it ends up being prohibitively difficult or time consuming. Maybe more of a bit-at-a-time, long-term project.

VitAnyaNaked

Do whatever you like 😅

Anonymous

Well, he said in the post that the black bars were here to stay.

Anonymous

Never noticed the blur before, but in direct comparison it does look nicer. Gonna vote neutral though, as I'd consider that more of a nice to have, than a priority.

IdarksoulsI

This wouldn't affect resolution or size of the screen images. Renpy will automatically scale the game in full screen mode, which you'd have to use if you want bigger pictures. The normal 16:9 resolution for Renpy's interface is 1920x1080 which when used would get rid of the black bars in full screen mode but still would be a small window in 4k resolution. (All these things are actually even more complicated, size of monitor, quality of signal, etc.)

Anonymous

i play in higher resolutions than full HD and nerver had any problems with the image quality so do whatever the most comfortable is for you

Neb the Pleb

Highest res please. I didn't make the retarded choice of paying 3K on this gaming computer to not see tiddy in high res

Anonymous

Please add the fix, the difference is obvious here.

Markedone

i agree that the change will make the game look better so please apply it, i think the game should look as best as it can as its so great.

Stavin

Vote for do whatever, personally I do play in fullscreen mode and didn't really pay much attention to the blurriness so if that stayed wouldn't matter much. If it got sharper cool but the extra effort for what could be a small percentage of the player base means its not something that HAS to happen.

CJ Koolio

I would obviously love the higher res pics, but don't overextend yourselves. You have worked hard on this project, and it already looks fantastic. Can't wait to see what you choose, and keep up the great work!

Waelan

I usually play the game in full screen (for immersion! ...and because my eyesight isn't as sharp as it used to be. What they say about masturbating and eyesight is true). :P Anyway, I don't really mind the blurriness. It's like playing with anti-aliasing on. :P I'd say to keep things the way they are, unless you are able to upgrade the old scenes as well. I have many favourites among the old scenes. :)

Anonymous

I play fullscreen on a 4k monitor but I never felt like the current resolution was too low

ToonLove

I don't see the benefit being worth the additional time you'd have to spend re-doing things. I'd much rather have your talents full steam ahead on content :) Table the new trick as lesson learned for the next project, whatever that may be.

Anonymous

Wait if cbob finishes mid of the month (now) the build will be open just for bug hunters I think? Holy shit that thought sucks. I'm really hyped 😂

Don kibonk

are there any news with c-bob?

Anonymous

Only news we know are from the last post. Due date is somewhere halfway through November (which is close), but it could also be another bad estimation from Cbob...hopefully all goes well.

Josh Spicer

Just to clarify, this wasn't an estimation from cbob. It was a deadline by the artist.

Moritz1948

Is there a chance that we can play the new build today or do we have to wait some more days?🤔 Hyped 🤙

Andrey

im also curious, we are in the second half of november now!

Moritz1948

At least a little update for us how its going would be great. 🤷‍♂️

Anonymous

Actually if you look at the last post the fact that Cbob was bad at estimations was what drove Marty to not say what the due date was. So yeah it kinda is an estimation lol.

Anonymous

Who else look every day if there is an update😂

Neb the Pleb

Its ok Mity. You'll update when you feel like. :)

TheAdvancedSet

I know comments here are in general a lot more positive than in any forum. But for someone like me, who checks here for an acutal update every time a little hopeful, then slightly frustrated and a little disappoited ... f u.

Luke Marsden

I genuinly prefer the softness that comes with the slight blur of lines. Might be a byproduct of years of blurry, pixelated 90's porn before broadband internet - but I also feel you can get away with more too.

MacarooniR0b

I think keeping the game consistent throughout is best. If you feel like in the distant future you could revamp the resolution across the whole game then do that. But I think it would feel weird to have the resolution suddenly get sharper at the end of the game.
