In the darkness of the fourth floor, the only thing visible to the naked eye the four of them standing on that floating chunk of rock, with Xavier’s Spiritual Trifecta spell giving off a silver light, and Siobhan’s fireball washing them in flickering orange, Howard and Justin struck Xavier in the back with a constant stream of attacks, slicing through his Shrouded Robes, gouging sharp red lines through his skin that were healed a moment later by Siobhan.

Every few seconds, pure bolts of lightning lit up the darkness that surrounded them, shooting off from the rock and plunging into that blackness before they formed massive white, translucent apparitions that flew through one clutch after another.

They saw the apparitions spark. Saw them pass through the Dark Wyverns and kill them all instantly. Even Xavier was in awe of what he could do, though he’d already done it once before.

Xavier didn’t kill the enemies as fast as he could. He wanted more time for his Physical Resistance skill to rank up—wanted to give Howard and Justin more time to strike him.

After a hundred or so strikes to his back, the damage they caused increased.

“Physical Damage ranked up!” Justin said excitedly.

“For me too,” Howard bellowed.

A few moments—and a dozen more strikes—after the two had spoken, a notification popped up in Xavier’s vision.

Physical Resistance has reached rank 7!

He smiled, glad his plan was working.

It must have been working for Siobhan, too, as after a while the cooldown on her Heal Other spell reduced. The heals came faster, and worked more effectively.

Xavier destroyed nine hundred and ninety of the Dark Wyverns. During that time, only two more notifications came.

Physical Resistance has reached rank 8!

Soul Strike (Ranged) has taken a step forward on the path!

Soul Strike (Ranged) is now a Rank 4 spell.

One cannot walk backward on the path.

And, once more, my soulkeeping threshold has increased.

It was at 50 now. With Spirit Infusion at Rank 2, and Soul Strike at Rank 4, he was eager to test how many Dark Wyverns he could take out using a single soul.

And I want to see if I can expand its area-of-effect damage…

He had an idea. One he was eager to try once they refreshed this floor and farmed it for a third time.

Sharing Mastery Points with Siobhan as he was, he’d gotten about halfway to level 12. If he kept sharing Mastery Points with her, it would take him farming the floor two more times.

Which, honestly wouldn’t take very long.

When only one clutch remained—the clutch holding the beast with the most powerful aura, the one that was no doubt the floor boss—Xavier turned to Siobhan and scanned her.

{Human – Level 10}

Xavier blinked. “Whoa. That was fast.”

Siobhan’s face lit up in a smile. She was practically beaming up at him. “Right!” She looked down at herself, gripped her staff tightly. “I feel so much more powerful! The System isn’t even letting me gain any more Mastery Points now.”

Xavier smiled back at her. He couldn’t help it. Her enthusiasm brought it out in him. “You’ll be able to choose your class when we return to the Staging Room. Do you feel ready?”

Siobhan shook her head. “I can’t wait to do that, but I don’t think I’m ready yet.” Her forehead scrunched in thought. “I won’t be able to achieve what you achieved with your stats, hitting the 100-point threshold in each of them—I won’t be able to do that in any—but there may be something else I can do.” She gestured toward him, taking in his Shrouded Robes and his staff-scythe. “Pushing forward a little more clearly paid off for you in your class choice. I know I won’t be able to choose an epic class. But, maybe I could get a rare one?”

Xavier dipped his head. “What do you wish to do?” Without gaining new titles, all she could really do was gain more spell and skill ranks before choosing her class. He supposed she could wait until they were on the next floor to choose her class, but he didn’t knew if another two titles would make much of a difference for her.

Her head down, staring off into the darkness, she seemed to consider this deeply. “I wanted a path that was both offensive and defensive, but maybe that’s not the best thing for us all.” She raised her head, looking at the fireball hanging in the air above them, illuminating them in that burning, flickering light. The light of the flames brought out the red of her hair even more. “The two things that have come most in handy are my Summon and Heal Other spells.”

Xavier titled his head to the side. “Are you really willing to give up an offensive Mage path?” That hadn’t been what she’d said last time.

Siobhan dipped her head in a nod. “Of course. The path I choose isn’t just about me. It’s not even just about our party. It’s about everyone back on Earth.” She stepped to the edge of the rock, scrunching up her eyes, peering into that darkness. “The path I took the Summon spell, it’s… not about summoning beasts or anything like that. It’s about helping summon allies to where they need to be. And I think… the description seems to imply that it can be used on a grand scale once it’s become powerful enough.”

Howard frowned. “A grand scale?” he asked, joining the conversation. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, one day, I might be able to teleport an entire crowd out of danger. Or, when I become truly powerful, maybe transport an entire army.” Siobhan looked at Xavier. “Could you imagine how much that would help back on Earth? The world… the world is huge, and we have no idea what’s still intact. Getting people from one place to another will be incredibly valuable.”

Justin perked up. “And you could get Xavier where he needs to go, like fast travel in a video game!”

Xavier pondered that for a moment. It certainly wouldn’t have been something he would have thought to do. Troop movements. It was such a logistical thing. His focus was purely on his own power. Hers was on helping others, however she could.

It made complete sense.

Now that she’d brought it up, he didn’t realise how he couldn’t have thought about it before. And what Justin said about getting him where he needed to go… When they returned to Earth, he might be needed all over the world. And though she likely wouldn’t be able to transport him that far yet, if she were able to do that in the future, then Siobhan was right. The spell would be invaluable.

Even on a small scale. Crowd control. Getting people out of danger. She could save a lot of lives without even having to resort to healing them, simply by ensuring they weren’t there to get injured in the first place.

But it wasn’t the small scale that captivated Xavier.

His thoughts went wild, thinking beyond their little blue planet, the third rock from their sun, and about other planets in the Greater Universe. Other worlds. He already knew there was such a thing as portals—he’d seen one with his own eyes—but he wondered if there were other ways to get from one world to another.

And if Siobhan might be the key to unlocking that down the line.

We could take the fight to the enemy. Or find allies out there in the Greater Universe.

He was glad he’d decided to level her up. “All right. That makes complete sense. Actually, I love that idea. So, what would you like to do before choosing your class? How can we make you get the best possible class with this path possible?”

“I want to get my Summon spell, along with Heal Other, up to Rank 10. Maybe… maybe even beyond that. I was able to progress the Summon spell to Rank 5 while we were locked from entering the next tower floor, but I seem to have hit a barrier with it.” She frowned. “I think it needs to be used in combat to progress further.”

“What rank is Heal Other?” Xavier asked.

“After what we did here? It’s Rank 8. So that’s almost ready. If we do this one more time, I’m sure it’ll reach Rank 10. But… maybe it would be better if Summon was a higher level when I came to choose my class?”

Justin peered over the edge of the floating platform. “Is this really the best place to practice your Summon spell?”

Siobhan smiled, an idea seeming to occur to her. “Actually, I think it’s the perfect place.” She had a glint in her eye. It looked almost menacing. “And I think I’ve got an idea for the two of you… How do you feel about flying?”
