Hey some color! I tell you time flies, I was going to mention "not too long ago" showing some mechwarrior designs I worked on, but that was THREE YEARS AGO! That was not too long after I re-geared my page to show off all this Battletech production stuff, so that's 3 years many of you have been along for the ride. I'm glad we've been able to offer such a peek inside what the IP is up to.

Anyway. I was asked if I'd like to tackle some more character art and I jumped at it. I was assigned the SLDF mechwarrior. The goal was to show reference to the old depicted look, but bring it into modern design. This would also be an example of what a well funded unit might equip their mechwarriors with, as opposed to what becomes more common into the succession wars.
Still a sizable helmet, but not so heavy that a full neck brace is needed. That said there's still a supporting collar (that also offers full environment sealing) and neck guard.
As mentioned the spec was for a full seal, maybe even vacuum rated, so no bare legs or arms here.
Full arm and leg cooling included, even down to the joints where the cross lined fabric is visible.

Unfortunately I fell to time constraints and had to give up another assignment for a classic succession wars mercenary mechwarrior. Meaty arms, bare abs, shorts and all. Just had to mention that so that no one thinks I'm trying to erase sweaty scantily clad pilots from the visual canon hahaha. One day you'll see that one from Marco Mazzoni.

I have one other character illustration on hand, but I'm not sure if it's showing too much at this point. So look forward to that one some time later. Hopefully not too much later.

Enjoy!

True to the original, but taken up to eleven.

I like it. It's a nice rework of the old art.

Freaking amazing. I never ever bought into the idea that coolant suits etc were lostech. Lets be honest, the old 80's art design of the combat jockstra/battle bikini was largely an excuse to have some art of ladies wearing as little as possible without it being porn. (Mainly Natasha K) A 'Mechwarrior takes probably years to train to a proper degree and as not everyone can be a Mechjock then that makes them a hugely vauable investment as well as the cost spent in training them. So having your guy or gal sitting there in some shorts and a sleeveless puffer jacket with a dustbin on their head is just asking Mr Sod and Murphy of Law to come along and kick them in the teeth. Because Spalling is a thing, and that will do horrid things to you like cut arteries. A Mechwarrior would be trussed up like a jet fighter pilot or F1 racing car driver, with a neck, shoulder and back brace, multiple point harnesses, not just a seatbelt or at best a 4 point one. This design works SO well and it makes logical sense, full body cooling and we can assume that this material is made of whatever next gen tear proof material or Space Kelvar to protect the pilot against spalling and the like. Stunning work, and I hope we see more of this and an end to the idea that Mechwarriors would go into battle in a thong and parka jacket, because if they can still make yper-lethal particle cannons and armor-melting lasers, but they cannot make a suit with a few meters of coiled hoses inside of it? So yeah, more of this please!

A very nice functional update. I'd love to see more "modern" character designs

Nice I always like the full suit pilot's artworks especially some of the new stuff from the video games

I mean, the whole "hypocritic" technology scale is kind of part of Battletech's charm imo, it's like how FTL is so advanced you can jump from star to star in the literal blink of an eye, but travelling from planet to planet or jump point to planet can take days if not weeks of travel. It's taken entirely seriously but also gives everyone a good chuckle at how ridiculous it kind of is. Same way for Cooling Vests if you ask me. Besides, Cooling Vests are mostly for Succession Wars and Clan Invasion, I think some time around FedCom Civil War or Jihad eras Cooling Vests are outmoded by a full return of Cooling Suits like you see above to main manufacture.

It's definitely an improvement over the old artwork.

Hilarious that cooling suits are basically today's technology (in fact, 20th Century tech) and they don't need the toxic "coolant" that Mechwarriors are so afraid of in the lore. One of their own contributors who is an actual defense engineer explained just how simple it is. Aside from the "cheescake" thing, I believe the other reasons cited before were an out of context homage to Asimov's Foundation (where abbreviated clothing was used in a hot science facility in one of the books), and an homage to Mad Max. As for this, I think I'll use it as the MCS (Mechwarrior Combat Suit) that was issued for hostile environments in the SLDF and keep the old 80's pic (which matches the stuff in Liberation of Terra) for the "day to day" non-hostile environment SLDF uniform. Looks amazing, BTW.

The purple coloration on the faceplate makes me think of the diving suits from the movie “The Abyss”.

When I saw this the first thing I thought was. Okay so you are planning on redoing the role playing game. Good call.

Personally I don't care for the whole pilots fighting in their underwear thing. A vehicle that heats up that badly in the cockpit is not a reliable weapon at all. I prefer what they showed in the TV series or even something like what EFSF pilots in Gundam wear in the cockpit while planetside. Fun fact my original faction, the Deep Stars Concordat, has improved cockpit insulation and such so pilots don't fight nearly naked and sweaty and are actually more or less comfortable and alert in their cockpits and not fighting heat stroke while they're trying to fight the enemy.
