These tips are designed for beginners. However, I am sure that even if you have been playing for a while, some of these tips could apply to you so, keep watching the video. We will be covering: -Point 1. Learn the fretboard. The fretboard is a map that can help you explore new melodic and harmonic possibilities. Make sure you learn how to use it.  -Point 2. Own what you play. Analyze the chords and melodies that you play allows you to create new melodic and harmonic ideas quickly. -Point 3. Improve your technique. Use mechanical exercises to improve your fingerstyle and fretting technique.  -Point 4. Practice scales with purpose. Once you learn the notes of a scale, spend time transforming these notes into a melody.  -Point 5. Diversify your practice routine. Stop always playing the same things and add new things into your playing.  Let me know which one is your favorite point.  Enjoy the lesson. 0:00 About this lesson. 0:59 Tip 1. Thanks for the tips. My problem is that I have been doing everything you told for about two years, but don't know how to progress (

I had been learning easy popular songs, but as soon as I saw you I knew I needed to try something different. I’m still new, but am loving the melodies and your teaching style. I notice that my skills are expanding thanks to you. Which is exciting thank you.

Thanks for codifying these tips. They are important for beginners of course but are also good for advanced players to revisit from time to time to refresh thinking and get out of the inevitable ruts. They’re also good warm-up exercises. They encourage doing the hardest exercise of all: just consistently thinking.

Hi Marco,

Thanks for the tips. All of them are helpful. Learning the fretboard is a pain in the neck, but so important. Thanks for reinforcing this.

I thought Tip #1 was going to be "Master the E major chord" :P, learning the fret board doesn't sound so bad though, thank you Marco!

Brilliant! Every single tip is better than the one before! It's really wonderful to have the guidance and you put such effort into it and fill in all the blanks. Thank you so much!

This exactly why I am a Patreon for Marco. This stuff really helps me to learn how to play better. I use these kinds of exercises every single day. Thank you.

This is an awesome lesson! Thanks, Marco. Ciao, John

I know, hehe. But it is one of the things that many students put off for so long. I mean, learning the E major chord is easy, right? But memorizing the fretboard can be such a pain! So, yep. Learn the fretboard is #1 :)

Thanks a lot for watching the video, Chuck. I know, right? Some of these tips work for everyone, to be honest. Enjoy the video :)

Oh!?! Learn the fret board???? I never thought of it!!! I laughed and laughed at myself. So basic! + Own what I play. Know what I play and analyze it. In other words, engage with the music in more meaningful ways. + Improve my technique by finding the notes of chords to discover new shapes. Explore symmetrical exercises and have fun doing it. + Practice Scales with Purpose + Diversify my Practice Routine {Stop playing the same things over and over!} Thanks Marco, for sparing me months, if not years, of unproductive practice. My first step is to include learning the fret board in my daily warm-up routine. . . I'm happy!

Thanks a lot for sharing this, Lynn. I am super happy you enjoyed the video and that you find the tips useful. Let me know it goes with learning the fretboard :)

Thank you, Marco. Really very helpful and fun. I couldn't find the fretboard diagram you mentioned in the lesson? I've downloaded PDF of your other tips which I'm keen to work on, but hope you could post the fretboard diagram again, thanks.

Hi Marco, thanks for this, great :). As Gabrielle L mentioned the fretboard diagram doesn't seem to be included, is that correct?

marcocirilloukulele

Hi Anja, sorry about that. I think I missed Gabrielle's message (which was posted three months ago). Are you referring to the fretboard diagram shown in the video? Because the tab displays the same notes. Let me know :)
