Music theory is rocket science.....at least that's how I felt as a freshman in music school. I studied my ass off for the entrance exam and barely made it!

I eventually figured out the problem came down to perspective. Instead of seeing theory as a system of rules telling me what I can and can't do, I started to realize it was just a shortcut to getting the sounds I wanted. Below are 4 main areas to launch your understanding of theory 

1. READ MUSIC

Step one, ladies love a man who can read those little black dots muhahaha. Standard notation is the universal communication system musicians use to spread ideas. Become fascinated with this secret language and the power it holds. Use the acronym Every Good Boy Does Fine for the notes on the lines and FACE for the spaces

2. INTERVALS

Step two, learn intervals, or the distance between two notes. The secret is to associate popular songs with each division. For example, the JAWS theme uses a minor second

3. SCALES

Step three, Metallica uses scales and so should you. Minor pentatonic, the modes and even exotic scales! A scale is just a series of notes that connects an octave. Form an emotional bond and remember the notes by improvising over a drone

4. CHORDS

Step 4, chords are 3 or more notes that unlock the babes hearts. Try out the 4 types of triads, inversions, 7th chords and fun stuff like quartal harmony!
