My best advice on how to suck at guitar Is to play the hard parts at full speed before learning them.

Of course we all do this. It’s like trying to assemble something before reading the instructions. We want results fast! The truth is, it’s actually quicker to slow down and address challenges in a methodical manner.

This week we’re working on my Beginner Practice Routine #1. This workout is a 25 minute systematic program to get instant results. You’ll need a metronome, your guitar and a clear mind. I’d recommend scheduling this 25 minute session first thing in the morning, so all 666 brain cells are firing on level 9,000. Get pumped up for the sacred ritual known as fingering the g string. During this time, we step through a portal to another dimension and channel our true power.

🛑Exercise 1: Chromatic Scale

The first exercise is a common chromatic scale workout. This gets our fingers moving without challenging our brain. Strive to keep your fingers close to the fretboard, keeping your motion efficient.

🛑Exercise # 2: Chord Workout

Chords are the backbone of guitar playing. Strumming through a chord progression is where the guitar really shines. Am-F-C-G is perhaps the most common chord progression we hear these days. Try playing this crucial progression using inversions. Each chord voicing takes on unique character. It’s essential for composers to have a vast bank of harmonic options to articulate their creative visions

🛑Exercise 3: A Minor Pentatonic Scale

Exercise #3 is the iconic A minor pentatonic scale. This scale is responsible for countless hit songs and solos. Try jamming along to the backing track below. This is my personal favorite aspect of practicing. Freely improvising over a track and developing my own ideas and sound.
