Back in 2006 I had just graduated from music school and was wondering what the hell to do with my life. After talking it over with friends and family, I decided to record an album. I had no experience in the music industry and basically made every mistake possible!!!

After 5 months of recording, I had a batch of songs that would shock and horrify any radio station. The music was highly progressive and experimental, using concepts like polytonality and bizarre time signatures

So I figured I'd send my masterpiece to Metal Blade Records and get signed. I mean, how hard could it be right? I sent a CD in (remember those things) and received some feedback a couple months later. The reviewer said my music needed some work! One thing he mentioned changed my life forever. He said my guitars had no DEPTH because I didn't double track and pan them

If you're just getting into recording, I promise this will 10x your guitar sound. I demonstrate this in the video above. Basically, you record two separate guitar takes of your riff. DO NOT copy and paste! Then pan each take hard left and right in the stereo field to create a massive guitar tone. Nearly all metal and rock guitar parts are recorded this way.

Needless to say, Metal Blade declined my record deal but I learned a lot from the experience.

I included some other fun ideas below in the tab to try out for recording. Things like retrograde, or playing a riff backwards and inversion, or playing upsidedown. Let me know below if you guys have an interest in the recording process and we can talk more about this stuff!

Don’t make this MISTAKE!!!

Playing it safe in your music is a HUGE MISTAKE!!! I’m fact, that goes for life too. Without risk there’s no reward. Talking to that girl you like, or doing something that scares you just might pay off. Make your music stand out from the crowd with Judas Priest’s secret recording techniques. Recording your riffs in octaves can add tremendous depth and character. Panning two separate takes hard left and right in the stereo field makes your parts sound HUGE!!
