Guitar soloing is a scared rite amongst G-String fingerers

It’s our job to wield this ancient power responsibly. Even if you’ve never soloed before, you can learn FAST with a few basic steps

First, you have to know what key you’re in. Let’s say we’re about to rip leads over Led Zeppelin’s Stairway To Heaven. Locate the tonic note or the pitch that sounds like home base. It’s best if you can use your voice to make a connection within your body. “A” is the central pitch in Stairway

Once you identify the key pitch or root note, it’s time to find that note on guitar. “A” is located on the 5th fret of the low E string. We are now at a crossroads. the question we must answer to begin slaying wicked licks is whether or not our song is in a major or minor key. Try both a major and minor scale starting on the 5th fret to see which one sounds best. Stairway is in the key of A minor, containing no sharps or flats on the circle of 5ths

Try using the A minor pentatonic scale or any of its relative modes to solo. You could also opt for C Major or any of its relative modes. It won’t sound Major when using the C major scale because of the minor chord formula you’re soloing over

Try out a solo with the link below. It’s time to let it rip!
