Learning the guitar fretboard is scary AF

I remember my first guitar lesson. My teacher handed me a chart of all the notes on the fretboard and said, "go home and memorize this." I FREAKED and had no idea where to start

Not knowing the fretboard is like trying to write a book without understanding a language. It's a crucial aspect of speaking the musical language with your instrument

Just trying to commit each note to memory on across the neck is a fools errand tho. The truth is, memory works through association. You have to ascribe significance to something to make it stick in your mind

One way you can get better acquainted with the fretboard is to learn the modes of a scale. Attached below are all 5 modes or positions of the A minor pentatonic scale

Try playing them over a backing track and improvise with each pattern. Over time you start to develop a connection with each group of notes. The muscle memory starts to kick in as you handle your hardwood over and over

Use a tonic drone like the one below to explore each shape. Soon you won't even have to think about the patterns, they'll just bleed from your soul like second nature muhahaha
