Is the guitar fretboard a mystery to you? I could never grasp the notes on the fretboard by trying to memorize them. I remember my first teacher giving me a map of the fretboard notes. He told me to memorize them by next week. Instead I just quit haha

Expecting a noob to learn all the notes on the fingerboard without any context in a week is nuts. The secret is to attach meaningful significance to each note using musical exercises. Patterns, shapes and positions also help but nothing accelerates your progress faster than making music 

I like to improvise over tracks, playing horizontally across the board. This forces you to think about the notes, instead of regurgitating a scale pattern. You're also forced to think more melodically and naturally construct musical phrases
