The riff is an excerpt from my Master Of Metal Series. The key to mastering this riff is alternate picking. Or using down and up strokes with the pick. Use the metronome to build it up to speed from a slow tempo. Try 60 beats per minute at a 16th note subdivision. That's 4 notes per beat. Hold the pick on the bottom of the thumb and the side of the index for best results. Next, turn the pick at a 45 degree angle towards the floor to reduce friction with the strings. Music Theory: We're in the key of F# minor, which contains 3 sharps on the circle of 5ths. F#,C# and G#. The relative major key is A. The chord progression is F#m to D. Pretty simple. After the riff jumps up an octave, the bass implies the B dorian mode by switching from an F# emphasis to a B emphasis.
