WHY SCALES DON'T WORK
In the last post I shared how I got kicked out of my first band for being a terrible soloist. I'd fire random pentatonic licks that didn't make sense in all the wrong places. The problem is scales don't work without an understanding of one simple thing....CHORDS. I'll explain what I mean in the next paragraph below

CHANGE THIS ONE THING
If you ever find yourself in a live music scenario, like a party, or an open mic night, change this one thing in your mind. Instead of focusing on what you're playing, concentrate on the band. If the party is raging and you play a Eb note over a C Major chord, the babes will cringe. C Major contains the notes C-E and G. Target these pitches in your licks to enhance the vibe and save your reputation form utter destruction muhahaha! How do you figure out what the band is playing on the spot though?

HOW LEAD LORDS THINK
I didn't figure out how famous guitar players like Randy Rhoads approached soloing until I went to music school. Sometime around my sophomore year, I came to a stunning realization.....I could predict what a song would do without even hearing it. Most every song follows predictable formulas. Let's say the house party band invites you up for a blues in E. Blues songs follow a basic formula known as I-IV-V, or E-A and B. Shift your pentatonic scale pattern every time the chords switch to follow the band. Stay tuned for my next post to learn more about how to master chord scale relationships muhahaha!
