Spencer Tracy was very ill when this movie was being filmed. In the last scene where he speaks to everyone in the room. He nailed it on the first shot. There’s no need to re-shoot that scene. There was a lot of controversy about this film. Since Spencer Tracy was so ill, nobody would insure the film. So the actors themselves insured the film. It was the first time a kiss was shared on screen between a black man and a white woman. Unfortunately, Spencer Tracy passed away before the film was released. The love shared between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy has been unmatched by anyone as far as I’m concerned. There’s a scene where she and Spencer are speaking out on the terrace and he’s lounging. The scrip itself didn’t call for her to bend down. However, Katharine Hepburn, knowing how ill Spencer was. She went down to her knees in the scene to speak to him. So he didn’t have to strain himself by looking up. The actress that played Joey, was actually Katherine Hepburn’s niece. This and To Kill a Mockingbird are my favorite movies. Stanley Kramer the director & producer of this film. Was known for pushing boundaries and crossing lines to express his heart desires.
