Today's report is 34 pages.

What's the big story? The missile or missiles that struck Poland very likely were Ukrainian air defense missiles, and cooler heads appear to be prevailing.

The second story? Russia launched its largest missile strike of the entire war on Ukraine, plunging 10 million people into the dark and knocking out water, Internet, cellular communications, and heat.

Minor error? Page 12: Ukraine withdrawal due to Ukraine MLRS or Russian Withdrawal due to Ukraine MLRS etc? (Consider this constructive in the search for truth, and not critical/pedantic as I appreciate you’re under a lot of pressure)

I think we need to be very careful in making such a definitive claim that it's a Ukrainian s300 that hit Poland at this point. The crater to me looks too big to be a AA missile. There's no reason why it would be launched towards Poland to intercept a russian missile due to the likely direction of Ukrainian radar pointing ether East or north. Thus any interception would be head on, not to the side. And the part that really seals this more than anything else for me is that the initial pictures and 'analysis' of the supposed remains seemed to have originally come from russian telegram channels and 2chan. Please can we be incredibly skeptical of any information such as this that comes out in the immediate aftermath of any incident that appears to discredit the victim (in this case referring to Ukraine, even though I appreciate that Poland is also the victim regarding this particular incident)? I've seen the pictures and analysis reposted and discussed so many times so far and not once have I seen anyone question the source of it.

Here is NATOs response: "Since the start of Russia's illegal war in Ukraine, NATO has increased vigilance across our eastern flank," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after the meeting. He stated that we need to await the outcome of the ongoing investigation, but "we have no indication that this was the result of a deliberate attack and we have no indication that Russia is preparing offensive military actions against NATO". He added: "Our preliminary analysis suggests that the incident was likely caused by a Ukrainian air defence missile fired to defend Ukrainian territory against Russian cruise missile attacks. But let me clear: this is not Ukraine's fault. Russia bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine."

What I have said is that everything I have seen, and continue to see, from sources that I trust have countered the claims that it was a Ukrainian launched missile. From the crater being too large, the missile being fired in the wrong direction and recently commentary to suggest that the 'analysis' of the debris so confident in the claims that it was an s300 are seemingly KH101. Reminder that initial 'analysis' we saw that was initially posted by Russian telegram channels and 2chan boards. I'm surprised at how much traction the claims that it was a Ukrainian missile is getting. It just doesn't add up for me based on what I've seen. If one thing has been proven time and time again, it's that the claims that come in the immediate aftermath of an incident where fingers are being pointed towards Ukrainian error it almost always seems to end up being misinformation spread from pro Russian propaganda farms and indeed it was a Russian cock up after all. As Stoltenburg has repeatedly made clear all through their press conference today, we need to wait for the conclusion of their investigation. NATO has AWACs in the area 24/7. They track everything. That will ultimately be the proof, not (so far unverified) pictures posted around on twitter of bits of shrapnel and missile remains.

I was just as alarmed by the early reports as everyone else. I'm proud of the NATO leadership for starting with "let's find out" instead of starting with "let's bash somebody." And I agree with the NATO statement. Turning to calendars ... I just noticed a difference between the SITREP text and the podcast script: "It has been xxx days since the occupation of Crimea on February 27, 2014." The 15 Nov SITREP says, "3,171 days." The podcast script says, "3,184 days." The podcast is right. The SITREP is low, by 13 days. (I checked back to 11 Nov. The SITREP was low by 13 days on each day I checked.) Now, here's a geeky thought. "13 days" is also the difference between the Gregorian Calendar and the Julian Calendar (which the Russian Orthodox Church still uses, but which Russia abandoned as its civil calendar after the 1917 Revolution). That is, on the Gregorian Calendar, today is 16 November. On the Julian calendar, today is November 3. But that's probably just a coincidence. I'm not going to pretend that I know why yesterday's SITREP said 3,171 days, rather than 3,184 days. (Beyond "well, that's yesterday's number plus one.") But ... now that you know, you know. *friendly smile*
